Walgett Strengthens Grip on Top as Finals Race Heats Up
The race to the Elders Cup finals intensified over the weekend with the competition leaders continuing their dominance, while the Bourke-Brewarrina Barbarians dealt a significant blow to Gulargambone's finals hopes.
Walgett Rams 55 defeated Cobar Camels 5
The defending premiers continued their impressive season with a convincing 55-5 victory over the Cobar Camels.
Playing on their home ground, Cobar were determined to challenge the competition leaders and showed plenty of enthusiasm, backed by a strong home crowd and a full bench. In contrast, Walgett travelled with just the bare 15 players, having no reserves available.
The Camels produced a moment of brilliance to score their only try of the afternoon, but Walgett's clinical ball control, disciplined attack and dominance in general play ensured they controlled possession for much of the match.
Their composure and efficiency ultimately proved too much for the home side as the Rams maintained their place at the top of the ladder.
Nyngan Bulls 21 defeated Warren Pumas 0
The clash between second-placed Nyngan and third-placed Warren lived up to expectations as a physical, hard-fought contest.
The Bulls made the ideal start, with Sam Wilkins crossing first before competition leading try-scorer Derek Voku added another shortly afterwards. Nyngan took a deserved 15-nil lead into half-time.
Warren dominated field position for much of the second half, applying relentless pressure to the Nyngan try line. However, the Bulls' defence stood firm throughout a stop-start half heavily influenced by penalties and infringements.
No tries were scored after the break, with two penalty goals to Nyngan providing the only second-half points as the Bulls secured an impressive 21-nil victory.
Bourke-Brewarrina Barbarians 38 defeated Gulargambone Galahs 31
The Bourke-Brewarrina Barbarians have thrown the finals race wide open with a hard-earned 38-31 win over the Gulargambone Galahs.
In an entertaining contest, the lead changed hands several times as both teams traded tries throughout the afternoon.
The Barbarians laid the platform through their powerful forward pack, dominating the ruck and making it difficult for Gulargambone to maintain possession. Their six tries came largely through strong forward play.
The Galahs responded with flashes of their dangerous backline, with all five of their tries coming through slick attacking movements out wide. Despite their attacking brilliance, they were unable to overcome the Barbarians' forward dominance.
While Gulargambone suffered a costly defeat, the two bonus points earned from the match were enough to keep them in fourth position on the competition ladder.

Ahrens Cup
The only Ahrens Cup fixture of the weekend saw the Bourke Ewes host the second-placed Flamin Galahs.
Paige Wilson was again the standout performer, scoring four of the seven tries the Flamin’ Galahs scored in another dominant display.
The Ewes fought hard, with Tayla Atkins and Jammah Knight each crossing for a converted try. Martha Lindstad successfully kicked both conversions for Bourke.
For the Flamin Galahs, Paige Wilson also added three conversions to cap off an outstanding individual performance.
