Gilgandra will be celebrating its 22nd annual Tractor Pull for Easter this year. The Gilgandra Tractor and Machinery Club was first formed in 2003 and held their first rally in 2004.
For this year’s event the club will hold its first ever children’s tractor pull.
Club president Craig Gilmour said the event will feature about three or four children (aged around 10-12) whose parents are members of the club.
“This will be a sort of trial to see how it goes. These children already have some experience driving a tractor and will be supervised by a parent,” he said. The young competitors will drive the machinery as the adults.
The Tractor Pull features a sled which is essentially like a converted truck tray/carrier. As any tractor moves forward, a winch system loads more weight onto the front of the sled making it harder for the tractor to pull. The aim is to go the furthest. Tractors compete in relevant horsepower sections.
This first ever children’s tractor pull event will take place mid-morning before the grand parade. Children will also be able to compete in the popular tug-o’-war event too.
The Easter Tractor Pull is a very popular event with hundreds of people attending annually. It also features tractors, machinery and vehicle displays, a petting zoo, shearing demonstration, market stalls held by the Gilgandra CWA, food by Gilgandra Lions Club, and a coffee van.
Craig said with the current economic conditions, including the rise in fuel costs, the club is expected some impact on the attendance for this year’s event for both spectators and exhibitors.
