Tooraweenah Prime Lamb (TPL) hosted an information day for all lamb and sheep producers on Thursday, March 14. The six-hour event was held at the Woolpack Function Centre in Dubbo showground. Eighty-three people in total attended the event, including industry professional guest speakers from leading lamb and sheep businesses. Among them were representatives from Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), Fletcher International Exports, SheepMetriX, Te Pari, For Flocks Sake, Apex Contracting, and Gallagher.

“It was a very good turnout,” TPL business manager Amanda Cruickshank said. “We had such good presenters… [we were lucky] to get all the professionals in the same room at once.”

Like past information days held by TPL, the event was more focused on demonstrating new technologies to the livestock industry. Of note were eIDs, an electronic alternative to traditional tags. Ms Cruickshank noted that one goal of the event was to show producers how easy to use eID tags can be, and how to use them best and most easily for business. Presentations were also given on animal health, biosecurity, and meeting carbon neutrality goals by 2030.

A lamb taste testing was held, comparing the difference between high intramuscular fat (IMF, or marbling) and low IMF meat. Following this was a catered lunch and refreshments provided by TPL and Fletchers International.

Information days are ‘goodwill’ events hosted by TPL multiple times a year for their members. “We want everyone to stay up to date on new tech and practices in the industry,” explained Ms Cruickshank. She added that, usually, the events were open to members only. However, this time, the number of participating industry experts changed things. “We had such good presenters on the day… we had to open the invitation to the public,” she said. The next information day is planned for September.
