All the usual favourites were enjoyed at The GIL Library Hub last week.
DFYM LEGO® Club
The Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Children’s Book of the Year titles provided wonderful inspiration for the Designs From Your Mind (DFYM) LEGO® Club builders last week. The GIL Library Hub has copies of all the 2026 nominated books, and the builders used LEGO® bricks to recreate the covers of their favourite titles. Their creations included Paris from ‘Tiwi in Paris’, a phoenix from ‘Of Flame and Fury’, a beach inspired by ‘Golden’, a thriving farm from ‘A Farm by the Sea’, and dogs driving a car from ‘The Thylacine and the Time Machine’. These imaginative creations are fantastic works of art and are now on display in the library for everyone to enjoy.
Tech Club
There’s nothing more rock ’n’ roll than making your own guitar out of cardboard, connecting it to a computer with a Makey Makey, and shredding some tunes!
Our Tech Club members recently finished their Makey Makey guitars and, after connecting them to a Scratch coding program to play electric guitar chords, the GIL Library Hub was soon filled with the sounds of hardcore music.
Some of our rockers came up with the ingenious idea of using their ‘Earth’ cord as a guitar pick, solving the problem of needing one hand to hold the guitar neck while using the other to play the guitar.
Next session, Tech Club will move on from music to gaming, as we create our very own gaming controllers!
Storytime
The GIL Library Hub welcomed Book Week with a special Storytime for all our friends!
Toddlers and preschoolers donned special hats from our dress-up collection as we celebrated Book Week and enjoyed a selection of stories from the CBCA Children’s Book of the Year shortlist, including Prayer for a River, Save the Gum Trees, Bees and Big Blue Seas, and Frogs Are Our Friends.
We sang songs about animals, spotted them throughout our books, and used a frog puppet and toy insects to explore what frogs eat, extending our learning through imaginative play.
Our little artists also created wonderful artworks by colouring in the CBCA Book Week colouring sheet and celebrating this year’s theme, Symphony of Stories.
What a wonderful way to celebrate the magic of books, stories and learning together! We look forward to welcoming everyone back for Storytime next month.
Wiggles and Giggles
The GIL Library Hub is getting little bodies moving with Wiggles and Giggles, a fun, energetic program designed especially for babies, toddlers and preschoolers!
Last week’s session combined music, imagination and play to help young children build confidence, coordination, balance and gross motor skills, all while having a wonderful time with their grown-ups and other children.
The children stretched, moved and roared like animals during our playful animal yoga activities, then danced along to music and enjoyed the excitement of parachute play. There are plenty of opportunities to crawl, climb, balance, roll, jump and explore using a variety of age-appropriate equipment.
For babies, these experiences encourage early exploration and body awareness. Toddlers can practise developing their balance, coordination and confidence, while preschoolers can challenge themselves with increasingly complex movements and imaginative games.
Most importantly, this is a program where there's no right or wrong way to move. Children can participate at their own pace, try something new, repeat a favourite activity or simply watch until they're ready to join in.

Upcoming early learning activities
Next week, it's time for Books and Blocks! Spark your child's imagination as they build towering creations, drive trucks through tunnels, or create a city where dinosaurs roam. With endless opportunities for creative play, this fun session encourages imagination, problem-solving, and early learning in a welcoming environment. Suitable for children aged zero-to-five years.
Our popular Preschool Craft program returns next week, offering young artists the chance to get creative in the library. Inspired by their inner Picasso, children can experiment with a variety of materials and techniques while exploring their imagination and self-expression. Babies, toddlers, and preschoolers are all welcome to create their own unique masterpiece to take home and treasure.
