The GIL Library Hub News - September 22, 2026
It was another busy week for the enthusiastic team at The GIL Library Hub!
Design From Your Mind (DFYM) LEGO® Club
Designs From Your Mind (DFYM) LEGO® Club had plenty to prepare for last week, as we decorated the Glenys Prout Multi-Purpose Room for an important meeting of library managers.
Our builders were challenged to create their most spectacular LEGO® builds, and they certainly delivered! We showcased our knowledge of gears and motors, created elaborate drills and tools, built a fantastic model of the Titanic, and designed a giant LEGO® head out of bricks.
Some Tech Club participants also worked on giant cardboard LEGO® head masks for LEGO® Club members to wear during the Goin’ to Gil parade. At the end of the session, we tried on our costumes and giant heads, and they looked fantastic!

Tech Club
Tech Club let loose last week with a fun-filled video game afternoon! Mario Kart had us racing around the track, dodging shells, bananas and other racers, while the steering wheel helped us put our driving skills to the test.
There were plenty of laughs playing Gang Beasts, a silly game that kept everyone entertained. Our next Tech Club session will be the last for the term, with more gaming fun planned!
Little STEAM
T is for Technology at Little STEAM! Last week’s session explored the exciting world of robotics.
We began with a brainstorming session about the technology we use in our everyday lives, followed by songs and a story about robots. We then practised being robots ourselves and discovered the importance of giving clear and detailed instructions.
Then it was time to play! Bee-Bots are a fantastic robot for early learners, helping children develop sequencing and instructional skills, learn directional language, and practise mathematical concepts.
Our first challenge was programming a Bee-Bot to travel from the hive to a flower. Children estimated the distance and used informal measurement to work out how far the robot needed to travel. A Bee-Bot play mat added another layer of learning as children programmed their robots to navigate across the map.
We finished with a robot dance party, with our Bee-Bots spinning, turning and performing their very own special moves!
Our next Little STEAM session will be E for Engineering.
Upcoming School Holiday Activities
The holidays are nearly here, and there is plenty of fun to be had at The GIL Library Hub next week!
Join artists from Dubbo Art Club and learn how to create your own digital Zine. Young people will develop creative writing, mixed media and illustration skills in a fun, studio-based environment. This project is funded by the NSW Government through Orana Arts Small Grants Program and ArtClubDub.
Our holiday edition of LEGO® Club will provide plenty of opportunities for creative fun. Build, explore and create your own imaginative worlds out of bricks.
Ready for more building? Come along to Engineering at the Library! Experiment with things that move, roll, fall and crash, and design your very own Rube Goldberg machines.
Anyone can draw! Drawing at the Library will introduce children to the fundamentals of illustration, including how to draw cartoon characters and manga.
Finally, settle in front of the big screen and enjoy a movie with family and friends. The GIL Library Hub will be showing a recent animated children’s movie these holidays. Bring your own snacks and get comfortable!
