There was plenty of laughter at the Library Hub during the first Saturday Game Zone session.
Designs From Your Mind LEGO® Club
The Designs From Your Mind (DFYM) builders embraced Literacy and Numeracy Week by taking part in an exciting letters and numbers building challenge!
After spinning a virtual numbers wheel, builders discovered how many items they needed to create.
They then spun a virtual letters wheel to determine which letter would inspire their build.
Builders had just five minutes to complete their creations, earning Skittles for completing the challenge, with extra lollies awarded to those who thought outside the box and produced particularly unique builds.
There was plenty of creativity on display! Q inspired builds such as a quokka, queen and quadrilateral, while T led to tomatoes, turtles and tentacles. D resulted in dirt, dogs and divers, and V inspired vases, Venus and vegetables.
There was fantastic creativity, problem-solving and imaginative thinking happening at LEGO® Club as our builders rose to the challenge!
Tech Club
Tech Club participants don’t need traditional gaming controllers to play games - they can make their own out of cardboard!
At our last Tech Club session, participants used the Chomp Saw to cut out their very own cardboard controllers.
They then got creative with foil, copper tape and paperclips to create connection points for their Makey Makey.
Once their Makey Makey was connected to their homemade controllers, they were ready to play games on Scratch, replacing the usual keyboard keys with their cardboard creations.
It was great fun playing Super Mario and Flappy Bird on Scratch using controllers we had designed and built ourselves!
Saturday Game Zone
There was plenty of laughter in the library during our very first Saturday Game Zone session, a brand-new program for children!
Gamers raced around the track in Mario Kart, using the steering wheel to gain an advantage as they dodged exploding shells, rockets and slippery bananas.
They also battled it out in Gang Beasts, a hilarious game where players can work together, or against each other, to survive perilous game maps.
With plenty of chaotic game antics, there were smiles and laughter all around! We’re already looking forward to more fun next Saturday, and every Saturday after that!
Sensory Rhyme Time
Sensory Rhyme Time at the GIL Library Hub welcomed our littlest learners for a wonderful morning of stories, rhymes and sensory exploration.
Together, we shared baby board books including ‘ABC’, ‘Babies at the Library’ and ‘My First Garden Words’, delighting in their bright, colourful illustrations.
Through large puzzles, the children explored shapes and colours while developing their problem-solving skills by matching each piece to its place.
We sang plenty of familiar songs and rhymes, with the lycra sheet adding movement and excitement to our musical fun. The session concluded with bubbles in the children's garden, providing a magical sensory experience for everyone to enjoy.
Sensory Rhyme Time will return next month, and we look forward to welcoming families back for more stories, songs and sensory play.
Little STEAM
Little STEAM is back, bringing Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths fun to our youngest learners!
Designed especially for little learners, Little STEAM introduces fundamental STEAM concepts through games, songs, crafts and hands-on exploration.
Our first session, “S is for Science”, saw our budding scientists exploring the concept of classification.
We began by sorting ourselves into groups based on the colours we were wearing, before reading ‘Different, Same’ and classifying the animals in the story. Building on this new knowledge, the children explored a variety of objects and discovered the many ways we can group and classify the world around us.
Memory cards featuring different fruits and vegetables were sorted by colour, size and taste, fabric samples were grouped by colour and texture - from soft to itchy - and shells were classified by their size and shape.
Through play and exploration, our little scientists began to discover that there are countless ways to organise and understand the world.
Little STEAM returns next week, and we can't wait to continue our STEAM adventures together!
Upcoming Early Learning Activities
Preschool Craft returns this week, giving babies, toddlers and preschoolers the chance to explore their creativity with a range of fun art materials and take home their own masterpiece.
Books and Blocks returns next week with imaginative building and play for children aged zero–to-five years. Come along to build, create and explore together.
Join us for LITTLE STEAM next week. Enjoy hands-on science, technology, engineering, art and maths activities designed especially for preschoolers and their families.

The Point Blank Writers Group meets this week to share magical realism stories and explore this month's workshop theme, ‘The Void’. New members are welcome.
Saturday Screenings returns next week, offering another chance to enjoy popular films previously shown on Fridays.
