Designs From Your Mind (DFYM) LEGO® Club
Science is great! Last week, we celebrated Science Week at Designs From Your Mind (DFYM) LEGO® Club with a fun Science Quiz to kick off the session.
Our builders then explored the library’s non-fiction section to discover the many scientific topics they can learn about, before bringing their ideas to life with LEGO® bricks.
We had marine biologists heading off on Arctic expeditions, biologists discovering unknown animals, exploding chemicals, farmers with their animals, a spinning volcano, and even a zip line demonstrating the laws of gravity!
It was a wonderfully inventive session, and these fantastic scientific creations are now on display in the library for everyone to enjoy.
Tech Club
Rock on! The Makey Makey cardboard guitars are coming along at Tech Club!
At our last session, participants connected their Makey Makeys to the conductive materials on their guitars before connecting the circuits to their laptops. Using a specialised Scratch coding program, they assigned each ‘note’ to a ‘key’ on their keyboard circuit.
This involved some troubleshooting as they worked out which keyboard key should be assigned to each note. Drawing on their previous coding knowledge, Tech Club participants were able to solve the challenges and get their circuits working.
The first electric guitar chords were played on their inventions; a fantastic achievement! The goal for our next session is to finish the guitars and keep experimenting with the Makey Makeys.
Children aged eight and older are welcome to join us as we continue exploring, creating and experimenting with Makey Makeys!
Books and Blocks
Books and Blocks had a Science Week focus last week, with many elements of STEAM naturally woven into our play session.
Building with blocks not only encourages creativity, but also introduces engineering concepts, including balance, stability and gravity. We added a variety of toys to our play, including insects, snakes, ducks and dinosaurs, which provided opportunities to explore biology and the natural world. Using our frog puppet, we also experimented to discover which insects a frog might eat.
Our new tactile exploration board in the children’s area has a weather wheel, giving our preschoolers the opportunity to discover and discuss different weather concepts. One child was particularly curious about how objects can knock each other over, so we set up our ten-pin bowling set in the children’s garden. The children rolled the balls, observed what happened and explored cause and effect in action.
Science can be introduced in so many meaningful ways through play, and we had lots of fun discovering, experimenting and learning together at Books and Blocks!
Saturday Game Zone
Are you ready to game? Starting next week, the GIL Library Hub will be hosting a weekly Saturday morning gaming session for young participants. Race against your friends in Mario Kart, create worlds in Minecraft, or collect stars in Mario Party! All participants must sign a waiver form and children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Make sure you book in for gaming fun!
Upcoming early learning activities
Join us this week for Wiggles and Giggles, a music and movement program designed for preschoolers and their caregivers. Kids get to build motor skills, practice listening, and connect with their caregivers, all the while having an absolute blast at the library!
Stories, songs, and rhymes are an important part of early childhood development, and we warmly invite babies, toddlers, and their carers to join us for Sensory Rhyme Time next week. Enjoy a fun and interactive session filled with nursery rhymes, simple stories, and sensory exploration using specialised occupational therapy toys designed to support learning and development. It’s a wonderful opportunity to share the joy of language, play, and discovery together.
Little STEAM is returning next week! Preschoolers and their families can explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math through hands-on play and discovery! Each session features fun activities, stories, experiments, and creative projects designed especially for young learners. Come build, create, explore, and imagine together in a welcoming space full of curiosity and fun!
Upcoming adult activities
Are you ready to puzzle? This week Friday Puzzles and Games returns for gaming fun! Enjoy a variety of card and board games, learn something new, and join fellow puzzle-solvers for an engaging and social session. For adults, this is also a wonderful opportunity to connect with others while spending a relaxed and enjoyable morning together.
Join us next week for Friday Flicks as we screen a recent, well-reviewed G or PG-rated film on the big screen. Why not visit one of Gilgandra’s great cafés beforehand and bring along some treats to enjoy during the movie?
Next week it’s time for Saturday Screenings, where we replay some of the popular films previously shown on Fridays. It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up on a movie you may have missed or simply enjoy it again on the big screen.
