The GIL Library Hub News - May 5, 2026
There was plenty on as usual at The GIL Library Hub last week.

DFYM LEGO® Club
The amazing Gilgandra Show was still fresh in our minds, so the Designs From Your Mind (DFYM) builders set out to recreate their favourite rides and events from the weekend.
The rides were a big hit, with builders bringing to life dodgem cars, the Freak Out, bungee jumps, and Ferris wheels.
Others turned their attention to Sideshow Alley, even creating a working shooting range using a conveyor belt.
Our minifigure crocodiles, turtles, and snakes came in handy for recreating the reptile show, with some minifigures bravely holding crocodiles, just like they were allowed to do at the real event!
Tech Club
Movie production was in full swing at Tech Club last week with our film-makers combining live action with augmented reality effects.
Having decided the themes of their movies, it was time to take short clips to incorporate into iMovie to create a trailer.
There were chefs fighting monsters in the kitchen, a cheerleader dancing around a Lamborghini in the car park and bubbling cauldrons on the library porch.
These movies sound inventive! We will continue with film making next session.
Little STEAM
Little STEAM is back for another term with a focus on science.
Last session the topic was ‘insects’, with the session beginning with our favourite songs and rhymes about spiders, ants and butterflies.
We listened to ‘One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab: A Counting by Feet Book’ by April Pulley Sayre and Jeff Sayre, discovering how many feet different animals have and the ways we can add them together to make bigger numbers.
Using magnifying glasses we examined a variety of insects in resin, counting their feet and using pebbles to represent the number of legs.
These pebbles came in handy when we needed to add the number of legs on different bugs, as the pebbles acted as a visual representative of the number.
To end the session we created weird and wacky bugs, choosing from a variety of insect body parts and cutting and pasting them together to create our own unique creature. Little STEAM will be returning this week with another scientific topic and lots of fun!
Riverview Book Club
Riverview Book Club met last week to discuss the memoir ‘The Last Daughter’ by Brenda Matthews.
We were saddened and horrified by what happened to Brenda and her family, here in Gilgandra, as members of the Stolen Generation.
Brenda's kindness, resilience and the way she has opened her heart in sharing her story were so striking.
For our next book, we have selected ‘Miss Treadway and the Field of Stars’ by Miranda Emmerson.
We have plenty of copies available at the Library. New members are always welcome.
Upcoming early learning activities
Stories, songs, and rhymes play a vital role in the development of our babies and toddlers, and the Library warmly welcomes them and their carers to Rhyme Time this week to enjoy the richness of language together.
Join us to sing nursery rhymes, listen to simple stories, and explore specialised occupational therapy toys designed to support growing minds. Babies, toddlers, and their grown-ups are all welcome to come along and join the fun.
We can’t wait to welcome babies, toddlers, and preschoolers to Books and Blocks next week! Together, we’ll use our imaginations to tell stories, build and create, and learn through play.
It’s a wonderful opportunity to socialise with friends, make new ones, and explore new worlds together!
Our popular new holiday program, Preschool Craft will be held monthly starting next week! Come and be a petite Picasso as you explore your child’s creativity in the library.
Babies, toddlers, and preschoolers are all welcome to experiment with different materials and techniques, and create a masterpiece to take home.
Point Blank Writers' Group
The creative writers of Gilgandra will gather this week for their monthly Point Blank Writers Group.
This month’s theme invites participants to bring a piece of writing beginning as follows: ‘I could sense them staring at me, but I knew I couldn’t turn around…’. This week’s workshop will focus on the topic of Science Fiction and Fantasy.
If you’re interested in exploring this topic and hearing the pieces our writers have created, we’d love for you to join us!
Upcoming Adult activities
Our adult arts and crafts session is on this week. Chat with others and enjoy a simple craft activity, free of charge.
Visit one of Gilgandra’s great cafés beforehand and bring your morning tea. Please contact the library to RSVP for this event as numbers are limited.
Join us next week for Friday Flicks as we screen a recent, well-reviewed G or PG-rated film on the big screen.
Why not visit one of Gilgandra’s great cafés beforehand and bring along some treats to enjoy during the movie?
Can’t make it to our Friday Flicks sessions? Join us instead next week for Saturday Screenings, where we replay some of the popular films previously shown on Fridays.
It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up on a movie you may have missed or simply enjoy it again on the big screen.
Library Book Club
The Library Book Club will meet next week for their monthly catch-up, where they’ll be discussing their latest read, ‘The broken shore’ by Peter Temple. We look forward to seeing all our readers there!
Tech Savvy Seniors
A new season of Tech Savvy Seniors is starting next week; Tech Savvy Seniors is free, fun and friendly small group tech training, made possible thanks to funding from Telstra, the NSW Government and the State Library of NSW.
If you would like some help with using smartphones or tablets, this program is made for you.
