Library Lovers Day

This Saturday is not just Valentine’s Day, it’s Library Lovers Day, celebrating libraries, librarians, and library lovers, and the valuable roles that libraries play in our lives. We encourage all Gilgandra residents to show the library some love this week, not with chocolates and roses, but by coming into the GIL Library Hub and using our resources, borrowing from our extensive collection, joining in one of our free activities, or just enjoying the space.

DFYM LEGO® Club

To support Gilgandra Shire Council’s community consultation, last week the DFYM builders thought of their ideal communities, and built them out of LEGO®! The builders had lots of great ideas of what constituted a great community, including fancy skate parks with steep ramps, lots of gardens and room for animals to roam, a McDonalds, plenty of public transport, a beach, and skyscrapers. We are sure that one day one of our builders will go into town planning!

Tech Club

Tech Club have begun their new topic for the term, 3D printing! Using Tinkercad, a free online design workspace, the participants began with introduction tutorials on the basics of 3D printing, learning how to move, size and group objects. It is challenging trying to think in a 3D space, remembering that objects can move not only left and right, but up and down as well! These tutorials will assist the Tech Club next week when they begin their first design project.

Little STEAM

Little STEAM will be returning this week, with more lessons on the fundamentals of Science. Young preschool scientists are encouraged to bring their grown-up lab assistants to this fun and interactive program.

Rhyme Time

Early literacy is so important and joining our Rhyme Time program is a great way to introduce babies and toddlers to stories and learning. Through songs and interactive stories we introduce the concepts of rhymes, colours, opposites, animals, counting and so much more! Last week’s session even included our parachute, which was so much fun to play with.

Books and Blocks

Join us next week for Books and Blocks, a fun program for toddlers and preschoolers, designed to foster creative and imaginative play through building and storytelling.

Point Blank Writers' Group

Chatter and laughter will be sounding through the GIL Library Hub this week when the Point Blank Writers Group meet, and you are invited to join. This week’s workshop is on memoirs, and we will also be sharing our stories inspired by Jayne Hutty’s exhibition at the Coo-ee Heritage Centre last year. We anticipate that these stories will be enjoyable, and new members are always welcome.

Friday Flicks

Are you in need of a relaxing morning? Come to the GIL Library Hub next week and see a movie on our big screen! A recent, well reviewed G or PG rated movie will be shown, for free. Bring along a treat from one of Gilgandra’s café’s to enjoy while you watch the show.
