Designs From Your Mind (DFYM) LEGO® Club

Winter is here, and it was bitterly cold for our Designs From Your Mind (DFYM) LEGO® Club leader, Miss Kristina!

Last week, our builders were given the challenge of “Warm Up Miss Kristina”, and the results were wonderfully creative.

Represented in mini-figure form, Miss Kristina was warmed up in all sorts of inventive ways.

Builders had her sitting by a fire (and nearly setting her hair alight!), suspended from a tower above a roaring bonfire, buried in the warm sands of the desert, baking delicious hot foods in an oven, and even using special heating machines powered by LEGO® battery packs.

Miss Kristina’s favourite idea that was represented in brick form, however, was to leave chilly Gilgandra behind and relax on a tropical island beach instead!

If you’re looking for inspiration on how to stay warm this winter, visit the GIL Library Hub and check out our fantastic LEGO® creations on display.

Tech Club

“Amazing!” “Spectacular!” “The best movies I’ve ever seen!”

That’s what Australia’s top film critics would have been saying if they had received an invitation to Tech Club’s Movie Afternoon last week, a special session dedicated to showcasing all the fantastic films created by our Tech Club members this term.

Spliced together into a 15-minute feature presentation, the screening included movie trailers, augmented reality videos, Klik-Bot and StikBot animations, LEGO® stop-motion films, and paper puppet movies created over the past few weeks.

The directors, actors, and filmmakers gathered with their families to enjoy the premiere, complete with popcorn and plenty of applause.

We laughed along with the movies, celebrated everyone’s creativity, and marvelled at the impressive techniques and storytelling on display. It was a wonderful way to showcase all the hard work and imagination that had gone into each project.

Our next Tech Club session will be our final one for the term, with a fun-filled afternoon of gaming planned. Be sure to book your spot and join us for the excitement!

Story Time

Colours were the focus of our most recent Story Time session, and Gilgandra’s early learners proved just how well they can recognise them!

We enjoyed reading ‘Froggy Green’ by Anna Walker and ‘Colour for Curlews’ by Renee Treml, and chatted about our favourite colours and what happens when colours are mixed together. We sang plenty of colour-themed songs and had fun playing with our rainbow-coloured parachute.

After reading ‘A Particular Cow’ by Mem Fox, the children were given cows to colour in, but there was a twist: their cows had to be rainbow coloured! Fortunately, singing the rainbow song helped everyone remember the many beautiful colours that brighten our world.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back next month for more early literacy fun at Story Time.

Wiggles and Giggles

We had a frolicking good time at Wiggles and Giggles, one of our newest programs for preschoolers and their families at the GIL Library Hub! This fun-filled movement program encourages children to get active, develop their balance, and build essential gross motor skills.

We kicked off the session by pretending to be animals, stretching and moving like giraffes, cats, and frogs. To celebrate NAIDOC Week in Gilgandra, we danced along to the Wombat Wobble, enthusiastically joining in with all the Australian animal actions.

Then it was time to explore the equipment!

Our little movers enjoyed riding the seesaw and rocking horses, kicking goals into the soccer net, balancing on beams and buckets, bouncing on trampolines, crawling through tunnels, climbing over ramps, and even trying their hand at tug-of-war.

With so many exciting activities on offer, there were plenty of opportunities to build strength, improve balance, develop coordination, and most importantly, have fun. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back when Wiggles and Giggles returns next month!

Riverview Book Club

The Riverview Book Club met last Tuesday to discuss ‘Black Swan Green’ by David Mitchell.

The group had mixed reactions to the novel, but it sparked a lively and engaging discussion.

At first glance, the book appears to tell the simple story of Jason Taylor, an outwardly unremarkable 13-year-old boy, over the course of a year.

Set in a small English village in 1982, the novel unfolds against the backdrop of the Falklands War, Margaret Thatcher's Britain, and the music and culture of the era.

Each of the 13 chapters focuses on a significant event in Jason’s life, with readers experiencing these moments through his eyes.

The chapters often conclude with much left unresolved, reflecting the uncertainty and complexity of adolescence. Beautifully written and rich in detail, the novel draws readers into Jason’s world and leaves them deeply invested in his journey.

The Riverview Book Club will meet again next month to discuss their July book ‘The fine art of invisible detection’ by Robert Goddard. New members are always welcome!

Upcoming early learning activities

Stories, songs, and rhymes are an important part of early childhood development, and we warmly invite babies, toddlers, and their carers to join us for Sensory Rhyme Time this week.

Enjoy a fun and interactive session filled with nursery rhymes, simple stories, and sensory exploration using specialised occupational therapy toys designed to support learning and development. It’s a wonderful opportunity to share the joy of language, play, and discovery together.

We’re excited to welcome babies, toddlers, and preschoolers to Books and Blocks next week!

Through stories, building activities, and imaginative play, children can explore their creativity, develop new skills, and learn alongside their peers. It’s also a great chance to catch up with friends, make new connections, and embark on exciting adventures through play.

Our popular Preschool Craft program returns next week, offering young artists the chance to get creative in the library.

Inspired by their inner Picasso, children can experiment with a variety of materials and techniques while exploring their imagination and self-expression. Babies, toddlers, and preschoolers are all welcome to create their own unique masterpiece to take home and treasure.

Upcoming Adult activities

Join us this week for Friday Flicks as we screen a recent, highly rated G or PG film on the big screen.

Make an outing of it by stopping by one of Gilgandra’s fantastic cafés beforehand and bringing along some snacks to enjoy during the movie.

If you can’t make our Friday Flicks session, why not come along to Saturday Screenings instead?

We’ll be replaying some of the popular films previously shown on Fridays, giving you the chance to catch up on a movie you may have missed or simply enjoy it again on the big screen.

Our adult arts and crafts session returns next week. Enjoy a relaxed morning of creativity, conversation, and a simple craft activity, all free of charge.

Feel free to visit one of Gilgandra’s great cafés beforehand and bring along your morning tea. As places are limited, please contact the library to RSVP.
