DFYM LEGO® Club

The Designs From Your Mind (DFYM) Builders celebrated WOW Day (Wear Orange Wednesday), showing their appreciation for the NSW SES volunteers who work tirelessly to support our communities.

The children created a variety of emergency scenes, along with the brave emergency service workers who put their lives on the line to help others.

Their creations featured tornadoes, storms, accidents, and medical emergencies, with mini-figure emergency responders coming to the rescue. These fantastic builds are now proudly on display in the library.

Tech Club

Tech Club students put the finishing touches on their original stop-motion animations last week, adding background music, title screens, and credits to complete their films.

Some filmmakers then moved on to creating paper puppet animations, drawing inspiration from nursery rhymes or developing their own original stories.

Next session will be our final active filming session before we conclude the term with a movie afternoon, where we’ll celebrate and enjoy everyone’s creations.

Preschool Craft

Colours are fun to learn about, and using watercolours is a wonderful way to explore them!

At Preschool Craft, we read A World of Colours by Ruth Owen and then searched around the library to discover as many different colours as we could find.

Next, we used crayons to write the letters of the alphabet before painting over them with watercolours.

To further develop our understanding of both colours and letters, we used masking tape to create the first letter of our names and then painted over the tape.

Once the paint had dried, we carefully peeled away the masking tape to reveal our initials standing out against the colourful background.

Our paintings looked fantastic, and everyone was proud of their creative work! Preschool Craft will return next month.

Adult Arts and Crafts

“Watercolour” Friday last week at the GIL Library Hub incorporated the use of, water, colours, brushes, salt and blue painters' tape in creating our large A3 treed landscapes.

Each person relaxed into a quiet and meditative process of methodically ripping and placing their pieces of blue tape to configure their own arrangement of trees.

Then it was time to play as the landscape was built up with layers of different techniques in applying and manipulating watercolour.

Colour washes, brush strokes, splatters, dabbing, and masking. As the lesson progressed folk enjoyed the gradual revealing of their creations.

The final joy was removing the masked border of blue painter's tape. Everyone was encouraged to sign their name as the finishing touch.

We now have the artworks of the June workshop on display in the DVD area in the library as a “mini” exhibition. Everyone is invited to pop in and check out the works. Book in for July!

Riverview Book Club

Next week, Riverview Book Club will gather to discuss “Black Swan Green” by David Mitchell.

Did you know that we have two book clubs that meet monthly at the library, and that everyone is welcome to join?

The library also has a range of book club sets of eight-to-10 copies of a book, that are available to borrow, free of charge.

Upcoming early learning activities

This week, join us for Books and Blocks, where little imaginations can create endless worlds of adventure and play.

Build towering structures, drive trucks through tunnels, or let dinosaurs roam your very own city - the possibilities are endless! Books and Blocks encourages creativity, problem-solving, and imaginative play in a fun and welcoming environment.

Suitable for children aged zero-to-five years.

Storytime will return next week, with lots of songs, rhymes and stories for our young learners. Come and join in plenty of early literacy, sensory activities and craft with friends.

Wiggles and Giggles is an exciting new program for children under six and is returning next week! Join us for a music and movement program, designed for preschoolers and their caregivers.

Kids get to build motor skills, practice listening, and connect with their caregivers, all the while having an absolute blast at the library!

Upcoming Adult activities

Join us this week for Friday Flicks as we screen a recent, well-reviewed G or PG-rated film on the big screen.

Why not visit one of Gilgandra’s great cafés beforehand and bring along some treats to enjoy during the movie?

Can’t make it to our Friday Flicks sessions? Join us instead this week for Saturday Screenings, where we replay some of the popular films previously shown on Fridays.

It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up on a movie you may have missed or simply enjoy it again on the big screen.

Next week, bring your thinking caps and your fun, competitive spirit along to Friday Puzzles and Games!

Enjoy a variety of card and board games, learn something new, and join fellow puzzle-solvers for an engaging and social session.

For adults, this is also a wonderful opportunity to connect with others in the community while spending a relaxed and enjoyable morning together.

Service NSW Savings Finder

Would you like help uncovering savings you may not know about?

This week, Lisa from Service NSW will be visiting the GIL Library Hub to guide community members through the Service NSW Savings Finder program.

Many people are eligible for a range of vouchers and rebates but aren’t aware of what’s available to them.

Lisa will provide one-on-one assistance to help residents check their eligibility and register for relevant savings.

Everyone is welcome to attend, and morning tea will be provided.

Revenue NSW Visit

This week, the GIL Library Hub will host Janaya Carney, outreach officer from Revenue NSW, who will be available to support community members experiencing difficulties with fines or debts.

Janaya can assist with a range of options, including lifting licence suspensions, reducing or disputing fines, setting up payment plans, or exploring options such as approved courses or volunteer work to help pay off fines. If you or someone you know could benefit from this support, please feel welcome to attend.
