DFYM LEGO® Club

Harmony Week celebrates the rich diversity of people, cultures, and relationships that make Australia so special. To mark the occasion, the Designs From Your Mind (DFYM) LEGO® Club explored themes of acceptance and kindness by creating “Friendship Robots.”

Builders were challenged to identify a problem and design a kind robot that could help solve it. Participants came up with a range of creative ideas, including flying robots to help people travel the world and experience different cultures, vet robots to care for animals, and robots designed simply to be a friend.

We love how these builds celebrate friendship, empathy, and kindness within our community. You can view them on display in the library.

Tech Club

Tech Club was buzzing with excitement as members eagerly awaited the results of their 3D prints from the previous session. Their fidget spinners were ready and waiting, and the designers were thrilled with their creations. Each piece was crafted by joining two inverted cones within a hollow cylindrical tube, resulting in a movable component enclosed within a solid structure.

For the remainder of the session, members were given the opportunity to create their own designs, applying the skills and principles they had learned throughout the term. They made the most of this creative freedom, producing a range of impressive items, including jewellery trays, name tags, and toys.

Our next session will be the final one for the term, where Tech Club members will enjoy a gaming session featuring the library’s Nintendo Switch and VR. Children aged eight and over are welcome to come and join the fun.

Little STEAM

Little STEAM recently celebrated the diversity of our country by recognising Harmony Day during the last session. Our Little Learners enjoyed the stories ‘Respect’ by Aunty Fay Muir and Sue Lawson, and ‘I’m Australian Too’ by Mem Fox, and sang songs about friendship.

They were then introduced to games from around the world. We played Mexican bingo, known as Lotería, and learned some Spanish words. We also played Otedama, a Japanese game similar to jacks, and Halja, a Syrian game similar to hopscotch - but instead of jumping into numbered squares, we hopped into different shapes.

For craft, the children created a beautiful Harmony Day banner, colouring in people of different shades, flags, and countries on a globe, before hanging their creations on a string. The banner will look fantastic displayed for everyone to see!

Our next Little STEAM session will be the last of the term and will be a special Easter STEAM session. Early learners and their families are warmly invited to join us.

Books and Blocks

Gilgandra preschoolers are fantastic at building and creating! At last week’s Books and Blocks session, they explored shapes, colours, vehicles, and toys through hands-on play.

We began by reading Changes, Changes by Pat Hutchins, a wonderful story about building with blocks. Inspired by the book, the children learned through play - constructing train tracks, experimenting with different-sized wheels, and discovering how magnets connect carriages together.

Using blocks, they built bridges and towers for the trains to travel through. Cars and figures joined in the fun too, driving along the tracks, while the people were loaded into trucks and taken for a ride.

Another favourite book, Freight Train by Donald Crews, inspired a colour-matching game, where children searched for blocks that matched the brightly coloured carriages in the story.

There’s so much learning through play at the library, and we encourage families to join us next month when Books and Blocks returns!

Tech Savvy Seniors

The final session of Tech Savvy Seniors was recently held, with participants exploring the world of online shopping. Moving beyond simply finding bargains, the session focused on building confidence, online safety, and informed decision-making. Topics covered included smart searching and product comparison, recognising trusted websites, creating and managing accounts, using safe payment methods, and avoiding scams and fraud.

A new round of Tech Savvy Seniors sessions will be offered in May. This free and welcoming program is proudly funded by Telstra, the NSW government, and the State Library of NSW.

If you would like support in learning how to use your smartphone or tablet, this program is designed especially for you. Please contact the GIL Library Hub to register your interest in the next session.
