The GIL Library Hub
It was another busy week at The GIL Library Hub.
Local and Family History Information
Do you have a question about your ancestors or about local history? At the GIL Library Hub our aim is to empower locals with information and the resources to find it.
Not only does the library have a local history section, but the GIL Library Hub page on the Gilgandra Shire Council website has extensive links to resources, including Ancestry Library Edition, which is free to use in the library.
DFYM LEGO® Club
Forget Valentine’s Day! We celebrated Library Lover’s Day at Designs From Your Mind (DFYM) LEGO® Club! Last week, our builders shared all the reasons they love the library and the books they borrow, and used those ideas to inspire their creations.
We saw scenes of children borrowing books and DVDs, joining in the library’s great activities, recreations of favourite book covers, and even builds of much loved stories.
We love building and creating at the GIL Library Hub! Designs From Your Mind LEGO® Club is held every week after school, and is designed for children aged five-to-12 years.
Tech Club
The 3D printer was fired up last session to print Tech Club’s first 3D designs of 2026.
After completing their tutorials on how to create a ring, the participants measured their fingers, created their rings and added designs for added bling; appropriately for Library Lover’s Day, our participants embedded hearts into their rings, adding a dainty flair.
While their designs were printing they had time to create friendship bracelets, using binary code to spell out their initials using the coloured beads.
They also spent time learning how the 3D printer works, and watching it print out the designs. Next session we will be moving onto creating elaborate buttons.
Little STEAM
We love STEAM topics and explored all of them at last week’s Little STEAM session on Library Lover’s Day.
We sang songs about our heart, learning how to spell H.E.A.R.T and that we feel emotions with our heart.
We conducted Science experiments to see how chemicals and colours diffuse in water, creating rainbows with our love heart shaped skittles.
Continuing onto Maths and Engineering, we used red jellies to make 3D shapes, then for Technology and Art we created friendship bracelets, spelling out our names in binary code, which is the special language computers use. There was so much love for libraries and STEAM, we can’t wait to do it all again next week!
Books and Blocks
Come to the library with other young families to join in Books and Blocks, a fun, free-play activity for babies, toddlers and preschoolers!
Last week we experimented with different shapes, discovering the delicate nature of balancing.
Our imaginations came to play as we created elaborate towers, plane runways, fire stations and pig enclosures. A simple block can become anything at Books and Blocks! Join us for another session this week!
Service NSW Savings Finder
Would you like help uncovering savings you may not know about? This week, Lisa from Service NSW will be visiting the GIL Library Hub to guide community members through the Service NSW Savings Finder program. Many people are eligible for a range of vouchers and rebates but aren’t aware of what’s available to them.
Lisa will provide one-on-one assistance to help residents check their eligibility and register for relevant savings. Everyone is welcome to attend, and morning tea will be provided.
Revenue NSW Visit
Next week, the GIL Library Hub will host Janaya Carney, Outreach Officer from Revenue NSW, who will be available to support community members experiencing difficulties with fines or debts. Janaya can assist with a range of options, including lifting licence suspensions, reducing or disputing fines, setting up payment plans, or exploring options such as approved courses or volunteer work to help pay off fines.
If you or someone you know could benefit from this support, please feel welcome to attend. Morning tea will also be provided.
Friday Arts and Craft last week, Friday Flicks this week!
Last week at Friday Arts and Craft, our talented participants created beautiful handmade cards using the art of quilling, with impressive results. The session forms part of our regular Friday program for adults, which runs on a monthly rotation: Friday Arts and Craft is held once a month, Friday Flicks twice a month, and Friday Puzzles and Games once a month.
These friendly gatherings offer a wonderful opportunity to connect with others and enjoy a relaxed and creative morning together - all free of charge. This week we’ll be hosting Friday Flicks, followed by Friday Puzzles and Games next week. Everyone is welcome to join us!
Tech Savvy Seniors starts next week
A new season of Tech Savvy Seniors is starting next week; Tech Savvy Seniors is free, fun and friendly small group tech training, made possible thanks to funding from Telstra, the NSW Government and the State Library of NSW.
If you would like some help with using smartphones or tablets, this program is made for you.
