After a long time between drinks, former local watering hole the Tattersalls Hotel has been purchased for renovation by Newcastle couple Chris and Rebecca Coffey. They hope to turn the hotel, which closed permanently shortly after COVID, into residential housing.

The Tattersalls Hotel was a popular location with locals and travellers alike. The building itself is heritage listed, one of 16 heritage locations in Gilgandra. Buildings that are listed have restrictions placed on them, limiting building options.

But the Coffeys are prepared for this. “We want to restore the building to its [historic state] … to bring it back into the community,” said Mr Coffey about the project. “We want to start working on it as soon as possible, so it’s not an eyesore for the town. We’re just waiting on council approval,” he continued.

Mr Coffey wanted to begin the project as a way to get closer to regional NSW. “[Rebecca] works out of Dubbo twice a month,” which he said is a lot of travel. The couple wanted to have a closer project to save on travel time between their two places.

The project will be completed by Chris’ business ‘House Hero’, a renovation service that Chris and his wife Rebecca have operated since 2017. Mr Coffey said other local specialists will be engaged for their services during the restoration.
