Snapped at the 2024 Tooraweenah Cup races
Tooraweenah Cup race meeting was well-attended.
Although it was a quieter meeting than the New Year’s Racing Carnival, the 2024 Tooraweenah Cup race meeting was well-attended. Held in beautiful sunny conditions on Saturday, February 10, the six-race program almost went off without a problem. Punters enjoyed the ups and downs of the bets, with a few favourites unable to cross the line in first place.
The drama came after the finish of the Tooraweenah Cup, race five, when the winning horse Aussie Pharaoh decided to enter the warmup area by jumping the fence, forcing jockey Clayton Gallagher to the ground. He came up quick from the ground and made his way to the jockey’s room, before being treated on site for a suspected broken wrist. Gilgandra Jockey Club president Jason Tate and the committee were pleased with the event. The race day was also used as a fundraiser for the charity Wings4Kidz which supports local family the Jordans - Laura, Damien, Dusty and Bridie. Bridie drew the raffle for a tv before the last race, and proceeded to give an excellent phantom race call over the speaker, rivalling the talents of the day’s caller Colin Hodges.
The raffle raised almost $1500 for the charity which enables the Jordans to travel by plane to Sydney for Bridie’s ongoing medical treatments. With the Bedgerabong Picnic race meeting also held on Saturday, the crowd was down a bit at Gilgandra for the annual Tooraweenah Cup meeting. The Gilgandra Jockey Club will now have a few months to prepare for the next scheduled meeting in August, the 2024 Collie Cup.
