What was happening in local sport in 2016!
Racing – at a cost of around $60,000 2.3 kilometres of new racing rails are installed at the Gilgandra racetrack.
Racing – Bruce Parker trains a double at the Condobolin Picnic race meeting with Spicey Angers ($2.50 favourite) winning a 1000-metre sprint event then Double Halo claiming the feature event on the day, the Condobolin Picnic Cup.
Sports Council – at the annual general meeting of the Gilgandra Sports Council there were no changes to the executive with Bryson Luff continuing as president along with Judy Quayle and Kathy Reynolds as vice-presidents and Mathew Wilson as secretary/treasurer.
Basketball – Gilgandra’s under 14 boys basketball compete strongly in the Western League Championships played at Bathurst, competing against Dubbo, West Wyalong, Lithgow, Bathurst, Narrandera, Leeton and Orange. The team consisted of Toby Creenaune, Wayne Smith, Jia Watson, Martin Fryers, James Ferguson, Coen Naden, and Ty Sutherland.
Swimming – individual champions at Gilgandra High School’s swimming carnival were Zoe Welsh and James Kildey (juvenile), Caitlyn Carlow and Kyle Welsh (junior) and Caitlyn King and Blake Frost (senior).
