In what could have been described as an arm-wrestle of a match our Ladies League Tag side played a do or die game against the Gulgong Terriers. For both ladies’ teams this was a must win game to be able to secure a place in the semifinals, and it played out in a very similar style to the last time the teams met at Gulgong earlier in the season.
The Terriers first to cross the line following 20 minutes of play constantly moving up and down each end of the field. Replying with their own try and to even up the game, panthers Rani Diggs made a break from half way to score and set up a successful goal kick by Kiara Brown. Similar to Rani’s try, Laura Jordan broke the Gulgong defence to run away and score taking the Panthers into the half time break in front 10-6.
The second half played out quite similarly to the start, perhaps with Gulgong holding more of the territory and Gilgandra making a few last-ditch defensive plays to save try attempts. Gil unable to capitalise in their own end, coming up just short several times to score again and were called to defend the Gulgong line.
Gulgong just squeezing a passed tough defensive to score and convert taking the lead 12-10 with 10 minutes to go.
With many final desperate attempts, the Gil girls couldn’t quite get there, the pressure from Gulgong too strong and the terriers took the win clear fifth place on the Ladies League Tag ladder and secure their place in the semi-finals.
Although disappointed the Gilgandra ladies were proud of their efforts and the progress they have made over the past few years to be a competitive team once again in this competition.
In the final round of the regular Castlereagh League season the Gilgandra Panthers will take on the Dunedoo Swans, this Friday night at home.
