The voices of sport

Last week I had the best experience; I met Andrew Voss, one of Australia’s top sports commentators. Vossy is an absolute tragic for rugby league and has called some of the biggest games on Fox Sports. Meeting him gave me the idea for this article to celebrate some of the best sports commentators and journalists in Australia and some from around the world.

I was in Mudgee for the Panthers versus Raiders game last Friday night (August 22) that Canberra won remarkably in golden-point extra time. The next morning, at the hotel café, I noticed Vossy. I asked for his autograph and shook his hand. He started chatting with me, asking where I was from and how far I’d travelled.

When I told him I write articles for the local paper, he was surprised and encouraging. He even looked up my work, gave me advice, and asked to take a photo together.

Later, I bumped into him again in the car park, and he spoke with me and dad, giving more words of encouragement. It really meant a lot.

As we watch most of our sport on television, the commentators make sport fun to watch with their passion, humour, and amazing stories. Here are some of my favourites:

Andrew Voss

Andrew Voss has been calling games for nearly 30 years. He started on Nine’s Wide World of Sports and is now the main voice of rugby league on Fox League. Vossy doesn’t just call the tries, he tells stories about fans, history, and the funny moments that make footy special on The fan. Voss also hosts a sports breakfast program on SEN Radio with Greg Alexander. He’s also written books about rugby league and yes, he gave me a shout-out on Instagram, thanks Vossy!

Ray Warren

Ray “Rabs” Warren is probably the most famous rugby league commentator ever. Even though he retired in 2021, his voice will always be linked to State of Origin and grand finals. He commentated 99 origin games and 45 grand finals - a record that’s almost impossible to beat.

Kerry O’Keeffe

Kerry “Skull” O’Keeffe is one of the funniest voices in cricket. He played 24 Tests and 53 ODIs for Australia in the 1970s. Skull mixes serious cricket knowledge with hilarious stories and one liners, often laughing so much he can’t finish his sentences. On Fox Cricket, he makes every match more entertaining, whether he’s talking about reverse swing or telling random tales from his playing days.

John Madden

From America, John Madden is a true NFL icon. He wasn’t just a commentator; he was a Hall of Fame coach who won a Super Bowl with the Raiders. His commentary style was so popular that the NFL video game series was named after him, and it’s still the biggest sports video game today.

Other Names that are the most iconic voice of their sports

Phil Liggett: Cycling and the Tour De France.

Murray Walker: F1 motor racing.

Richie Benaud: Cricket.

Vin Scully: LA Dodgers baseball.

Jim Nantz: US Sport, well-known for the Masters golf.

A big thanks

A huge thanks to Andrew Voss for the encouragement and support. Meeting him showed me that even the biggest voices in sport can take the time to inspire kids like me.

Footnote: Andrew Voss’ post on Instagram had a photo of Voss and Oscar Medd shaking hands, with the writing: ‘Gilgandra Weekly’s finest’!’ The post from andrewvossy read: “One of many highlights of my Mudgee trip was meeting @gilgandraweekly ace sports reporter Oscar. His Deep Dive column is a must read.
