New local leads Gilgandra’s Jeans for Genes Day with personal purpose
Gilgandra’s annual Jeans for Genes Day fundraiser is back this year with a fresh face behind the event and a renewed passion to support medical research.

Long-time organiser Jenny Johnston has handed over the reins to local mum Laura Jordan, who is coordinating this year’s bake sale and raffle with a personal connection to the cause.
The 2025 Jeans for Genes Day Bake Sale will take place next month along Gilgandra’s main street. Locals can look forward to a selection of sweet treats, all baked and donated by community members. A raffle will also be run, with prizes including a $200 IGA voucher and $100 worth of coffee from Kildari Collective. Raffle tickets will be available during the bake sale and at IGA during the week before.
For Laura Jordan, this year’s fundraiser is more than just a community event - it’s a cause close to her heart. “My daughter Bridie has a rate genetic disorder and lives with medical challenges; that has given me an appreciation for the importance of medical research,” Ms Jordan said. “Taking on this event felt like the right way to give back - and to give hope to other families like ours.”
Gilgandra has a long tradition of supporting Jeans for Genes Day, with the community rallying behind efforts to fund vital research into treatments and cures for children with genetic conditions. Ms Jordan said she was honoured to continue that legacy.
“Jenny Johnston has done an incredible job in previous years,” said Laura. “Now, I hope the community will come out once again and show their generosity for such an important cause.”
Baked goods can be dropped off at the stall the morning of the event or the day prior. Community members who’d like to contribute or get involved are encouraged to contact Laura directly.
All funds raised will be donated to the Children’s Medical Research Institute, which supports research into genetic diseases affecting thousands of Australian children.
