Panthers president and league tag co-coach Shane Byrne said it was a much-improved effort from the Pink Panthers.

“There was a lot more positivity,” he said.

“There was a lot more energy in the game … better attack and they just kept digging in for each other.”

Players player and the three points went to Wendy Brown (fullback). Two points went to captain Kiara Brown (halves) and one point went to Lori Thurston (forwards).

Summa Doherty scored a try in only her second-ever game of league tag while Trista Raines and Wendy Brown also scored four-pointers. Gilgandra went down 54-nil to Baradine in round one but all it took was some direction and familiarity with each other and everyone’s role in the side less than a week later to be far more competitive, scoring three tries and only conceding five in the 14-point loss to Coonamble.

“The organisation improved a lot,” Shane said. “We were a little bit more organised and there is cohesion building in the side.”

Coonamble wore purple headbands for Gilgandra local Kylie Louie who is battling cancer. The Gilgandra club will look at its own event for Kylie during the season.

The Pink Panthers will be at home on Saturday, May 10 against Gulgong with the match commencing straight after junior league home games.
