Junior Rugby League

Saturday, June 28 was a massive day for local sport as the Coonamble Bears travelled to Gilgandra to take on the mighty Panthers at McGrane Oval.

The under sixes continue to improve every week, showing off some sharp tagging and impressive offloads.

The under eights had a busy day with two matches - and two wins! Kobi Hammond stood out, earning Panther of the Week.

In a tough match against a physical Coonamble side, the U10s displayed excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. Jaxen Altus and Bella Hammond were standouts and took home Panthers of the Week.

The U12s teams both had a competitive hit out. With their skill set and team combinations getting better each week.

The entire Gil Panthers crew - and especially your U12s teammates - are wishing one of their own a speedy recovery!

Our U14s remain dominant in the comp. With Coonamble short on players, Gilgandra shared some of their own to ensure everyone got some game time — great sportsmanship on display.

The U16s game was the match of the day, ending in a thrilling 28-all draw. The top-of-the-table clash was a nail biter seeing the lead change several times.

The Panthers got off to a quick start scoring in the opening couple of sets but Coonamble were quick to hit back and then taking the lead a few minutes later.

At half-time the Bears lead 18-16. It was the Bears that scored straight after half-time after an error from the kick off but like the game had shown us, the lead would change again after a great individual try from Dallas Carr and then a very exciting team try that started with a Jack Gibson kick that we contested, got the ball back, went through several sets of hands to see Jack score under the posts and finish what he started.

With only two minutes left Coonamble scored a try in the corner and had a kick to win the game. Fortunately for the panthers it went under the posts.

The 28-all score line was probably not only a reflection of how evenly matched both sides are but was a good result for both teams considering they both had opportunities to secure the two points but were unable to capitalise in the crucial moments.

Junior Netball

Over on the netball courts, it was a special day with all teams wearing blue in support of ‘Do it for Dolly Day’, raising awareness around bullying prevention.

The U10s played a fantastic game against St Thunder with Indi Jeffery named Panther of the Week.

The U12s had a close win over Narromine Fireballs, 14-12, while our Senior girls also claimed victory, defeating the MAGS Meerkats 31-18.

That wraps up the first half of the winter sports season.

Training resumes Thursday, July 24, after the school holiday break.
