The town’s main street in Miller Street came alive with community spirit, sweet treats, and a shared determination to support medical research.

This year’s event marked a change in leadership, with Laura Jordan stepping in to coordinate the fundraiser after long-time organiser Jenny Johnston passed on the role. Laura brought a personal connection to the cause, as her daughter Bridie lives with medical challenges.

“My daughter Bridie lives with medical challenges that have given me a new appreciation for the importance of medical research,” Ms Jordan said.

“Taking on this event felt like the right way to give back - and to give hope to other families like ours.”

Local schools and businesses joined in, along with pubs and clubs that are continuing to raise funds throughout the month of August. The day featured a bake sale stocked with goods donated by local bakers, as well as a raffle offering prizes including a $200 IGA voucher and $100 worth of coffee from Kildari Collective.

By the end of the day, the community had raised $5500 for the Children’s Medical Research Institute, which works to find treatments and cures for children with genetic diseases.

“Jenny Johnston has done an incredible job in previous years, and I’m grateful for the groundwork she’s laid,” Ms Jordan said.

“The generosity shown this year has been overwhelming, and I can’t thank everyone enough for supporting such an important cause.”

Fundraising efforts will continue at local venues until the end of August, ensuring Gilgandra’s contribution to Jeans for Genes Day goes even further.
