Have Your Say: Upgrades to Hargraves Lane and Federation Street, Gilgandra
Gilgandra locals are being invited to help shape a proposed $40 million upgrade that would improve freight movements, enhance safety and reduce heavy vehicle traffic through the town centre.
Jointly funded by the Albanese ($32 million) and Minns ($8 million) Labor governments, the proposal plans to upgrade four key intersections and the Federation Street railway level crossing, making it easier and safer for larger vehicles to use the town's alternate freight route.
Located at the junction of the Newell, Oxley, and Castlereagh highways, Gilgandra is one of regional NSW's most important freight hubs, supporting the movement of goods and produce across the state.
The proposed upgrades will improve turning movements for larger heavy vehicles, making the alternate route suitable for a broader range of freight vehicles.
This will improve freight efficiency, reduce travel delays and encourage more heavy vehicles to bypass the town centre, improving safety and amenity for the local community.
The project plans to also upgrade the Federation Street railway level crossing, improving safety and reducing delays for motorists using the route.
The proposal includes:
Widening the Newell Highway and Hargraves Lane intersection and adding a southbound channelised right-turn lane into Hargraves Lane.
Realigning Hargraves Lane to create a four-way intersection with the Oxley Highway and Federation Street.
Widening the Castlereagh Highway and Federation Street intersection and adding a southbound channelised right-turn lane into Federation Street.
A safer railway crossing for all road users by realigning the Chelmsford Avenue intersection to enable the Federation Street level crossing to be upgraded with flashing lights and boom gates.
The Review of Environmental Factors (REF) and concept designs are on public display. Community members can view the plans, find information about upcoming drop-in and online information sessions, and provide feedback via the online engagement portal. The REF and concept designs are also available to view in person at Gilgandra Shire Council Chambers, and the GIL Library Hub, 30–32 Miller Street, Gilgandra, during normal opening hours.
“Gil is not just a gorgeous town. It is also home to one of NSW vital freight hubs that keeps our produce moving across the nation," senator Deborah O'Neill said.
“These proposed upgrades will make the roads in Gilgandra safer for everyone in the area.”

Member for Barwon, Roy Butler, added: “This is a significant investment in Gilgandra by both the state and federal governments, which is always appreciated.
“Upgrading the heavy vehicle bypass of the town centre is a win for truckers and also a win for local residents, who will enjoy less traffic in the centre of town."
