‘Give Back to Gil’
Local residents braved a chilly morning on May 20 to attend Gilgandra shire’s celebration of National Volunteer Week, honouring the everyday people who give their time to support the community.

Held under the 2025 theme “Connecting Communities”, the ‘Give Back to Gil’ event last Tuesday brought together volunteers, council representatives, and members of the public to acknowledge the significant role volunteerism plays in shaping the region’s inclusive and supportive atmosphere.
The of the event’s opening speaker from Gilgandra Shire Council, Merscia Kouroulis, expressed deep gratitude for the volunteers, noting that even small acts, such as handing out meals or sharing a smile, can have a meaningful impact. “It doesn’t take a lot, but it means so much,” they said. “Any form of volunteerism is so appreciated and extremely valued. We really wanted to thank everyone for the time that they do give to volunteer,” she said.
According to 2021 Census data, 17.3 per cent of Gilgandra shire residents aged 15 and over participated in unpaid voluntary work through an organisation or group. This rate is above the national average of 14.1 per cent and reflects the strong community spirit in the region.
Approximately 200 people participate in Gilgandra Shire Council’s own volunteer workforce including at the visitor information centre, Gilgandra Lifestyles, Community Care, Meals on Wheels, community transport, and the library hub and other social activities. There are a number of community-based volunteer organisations which contribute to the above average level of volunteerism, such as national or regionally organised groups such as the Country Women’s Association, local social outlets, advocacy groups, the community bank, sports, and other social or vital activities. Mayor Doug Batten officially welcomed attendees to the morning tea and praised the community’s strong turnout despite the cold weather.
“It truly speaks to the spirit of community we are so proud of here in Gilgandra,” he said. He also reinforced the importance of volunteers across the shire, calling them the “local legends” who embody the values of generosity, compassion, and commitment. “You don’t just give your time - you give our town its heart.” The mayor encouraged residents who may be considering volunteering to take the leap, saying there are opportunities for everyone, whether they have spare time, special skills, or simply a desire to meet new people and give back.
