Gilgandra’s second annual film festival was a great success thanks to the support of the local community and filmmakers. A large audience gathered in the Gilgandra Shire Hall to witness the event, held on Saturday, May 25.
A separate screening of documentaries produced by local young filmmakers was shown the previous night (Friday), in a segment that Gilgandra Film Festival director Sue Armstrong said she wants to expand for 2025.
For this year’s event, artistic director and filmmaker Simon Target returned for the local premiere of two of his films. ‘Warrawong: The Wind still Blows’, a sequel to his 2023 documentary ‘Warrawong: The Windy Place on the Hill’. The new short film focuses on Sue Armstrong after the passing of her husband Brian Armstrong.
Mr Target also debuted ‘Kozok: Alone Across Australia’, the story of Michael Kozok as he walked, cycled, and swam across the Australian continent from west to east in a test of endurance that lasted 14 months and 14,400 kilometres. It was a touching, humorous, and very human story that captured the audience.
From Iranian filmmaker Marjan Khosravi, ‘The Dream of a Horse’ also had its first screening in Australia at the 2024 Gilgandra Film Festival. It followed the life of Shahnaz, the oldest daughter of a nomad family in the Iranian mountains.
