Cultural Report

The cultural section of the meeting noted events coming up for October: Under the Gums and Goin to ‘Gil Festival, where the Gilgandra CWA will host a market on Sunday. There will also be a watermelon eating competition.

International Report: Country of Study, the Republic of Korea

A very interesting last report for the year on the Republic of Korea was tabled.

The liberation era began on August 15, 1945 when Korea was liberated from Japan at the end of the World War II.

The Koreans then suffered under their own Civil War from 1950-1953

At the end they divided their country into North and South Korea at the 38th parallel is the line of latitude (38°) that served as the initial dividing line between North and South Korea after World War II.

Agriculture/Environment Report

Regarding agriculture and the environment, guest speaker Andrew Schier, manager of Ahrens Silos Gilgandra, spoke to the group about the value of vacuum silos.

These silos allow farmers to keep grain for years and the silos are able to keep pests out permanently, when used correctly.

The aim of the silos is to keep grain dry and this allows farmers to store grain for future stock feed or when grain prices rise. It was an interesting presentation.

Publicity Report

Regarding publicity, the CWA awareness week is held each year.

This year’s week ran from September 7 to 13 and the theme was “seasonal eating”, covering food sustainability, food waste ,how we use it and how we can improve the ways we use food and source it.

Gilgandra CWA celebrated the event by holding a successful seasonal vegetables and fruit stall at the September market. Platters of orange segments, seasonal eating recipes, postcards, and the latest CWA journal being given out proved to be popular to the public. The event was an opportunity to promote CWA and increase membership.

The CWA Evening Branch’s August meeting notes and photos were published in The Gilgandra Weekly.

A highly successful publicity zoom meeting was held to prepare for the next webinar in November.
