The first round of pennants was played over the weekend with the Gilgandra bowlers going down in both grades. Grade seven played at home against Gulgong. There wasn’t any home ground advantage in this match as Gulgong recorded a convincing win with the score being 55-40 and a 10-0 clean sweep. The Gil Riley-skipped team had a close loss going down 17-14. The Wenden Riley-skipped team had an even closer game going down 19-18. Baden Fisher’s team lost 19-8. With the scores being fairly close, it won’t take much improvement for the Gil team to turn the tables on Gulgong when they play each other again at the end of this month.

The grade five team traveled to Baradine and like the sevens, they also ran second in being defeated 68-41, with a 9-1 result. The Fox Raines-skipped team were the only winners when they had a 20–15 success in their game after taking the lead on the first end and were never headed. The Norm Lummis-skipped team had a 6-3 lead after six ends. It seems his team liked the number six as they stayed on it for another seven ends. By this time Baradine skipped along to a good lead which the lads couldn’t peg back in going down 23-16. In the final game, one of the most consistent bowlers of late came back down to earth with a thud, although he did have three mates who were on that journey with him. This team being the Rambo Young-skipped team, who couldn’t get going on the day and were soundly defeated 25-10. In a pre-match team talk, Rambo advised not to give too many shots away and if all else fails, to get our wild up. By the time we took in Rambo’s advice the game was unfortunately well and truly over. A great day was had by all and the hospitality of the Baradine Club was most appreciated. Next Sunday the fives’ have the bye, while the grade seven teams will play at home against Binnaway.
