Wet weather has again had an impact on the Bendigo Bank ABC Shield with Gidgee scoring an important win against Curban in the only match of the Gilgandra District Cricket Association competition to proceed during round six on Saturday, December 7.

Two of the three scheduled fixtures were abandoned without a ball being bowled.

USC-Marthaguy had its home clash against Town Services at Warren abandoned with a pitch unable to be prepared at Victoria Park.

It means due to a wash-outs and a given forfeit due to harvest commitments the defending champions have only played one completed match this season.

The clash between Biddon-Tooraweenah and Gulargambone set down for Tooraweenah Oval was also washed-out and the points split.

A pitch couldn’t be prepared at McGrane Oval due to the mid-week rain, with the Curban versus Gidgee clash moved to Ernie Knight Oval in Gilgandra.

Gidgee made the most of an opportunity to earn seven competition points, batting first and posting 8-204 off its 40 overs before bowling Curban out for just 42 to record a 162-run win.

Gidgee skipper Tyne Chapman was happy for his side to bat so well after being bowled out for 74 chasing 112 in their last completed clash against Town Services in round four on November 23.

Conversely, Curban looked back on dropped catches in the field that cost them momentum in the contest as Gidgee capitalised to build a formidable total.

The Coonamble-based side won the toss and batted on Saturday and in a scorebook featuring five players scoring 18 or more, the best efforts came from Bradley Pickering (64), Kirby Chapman (36) and Mark Stewart (32).

Pickering and Stewart put on 71 for the opening partnership in just 12 overs to ensure Gidgee were set for a good total.

Wickets were shared around for Curban with Anthony Barry (2-29 off seven overs) returning the most economical figures while Mitch Carlow took 3-36 off seven overs.

In reply, Andrew Peart’s 21 was the only double figure individual score as Curban was bowled out in its 21st over well short of the total.

Bevan McEwen backed up his 22 with the bat with 2-5 off five overs in a good all-round display while Dan Smith (3-8 off five overs) and Brad Pickering (2-3 off one over) also returned brilliant figures for Gidgee. Ghulam Mustafa (1-6 off four overs) was also economical.

Bendigo Bank ABC Shield unofficial ladder (after round six):

Biddon-Tooraweenah 31, Coonabarabran 27, Gidgee 27, Gulargambone 26, Curban 25, Town Services 23, USC-Marthaguy 18.

Round seven draw - Saturday, December 14:

Curban v Coonabarabran at McGrane Oval, Gilgandra, Gidgee v USC-Marthaguy at Coonamble Sportsground, Biddon-Tooraweenah v Town Services at Tooraweenah Oval. Bye Gulargambone.
