The late Geoff Kiehne will be memorialised with the presentation of a new annual Australia Day award, ‘The Geoff Kiehne Emergency Services Volunteer of the Year Award’.

Geoff’s wife, Barbara Kiehne, returned to Gilgandra with her family to present the inaugural award at this year’s local Australia Day Awards.

She said following Geoff’s passing, she wanted to ensure his legacy of volunteerism wouldn’t be forgotten by the local community.

“This was an idea grounded in love, respect, and a deep understanding of what Geoff stood for. This was an idea warmly supported by Gilgandra Shire Council, and one that reflects the values we hold so strongly here in Gilgandra,” she said.

“Geoff was a volunteer in the truest sense of the word. Over the course of his life, and particularly through more than 30 years of service to the Gilgandra community, Geoff gave his time, his skills, passion and his energy without expectation or recognition.

“Geoff served in multiple roles, always stepping forward when help was needed, and always putting community before himself. I didn't want Gilgandra to actually ever forget Geoff, because he's such an amazing person, and I miss him so much.

“This award is not just about emergency services it is about reliability, compassion, and commitment. It honours those who show up, stay the course, and make our community safer and stronger through their service.

“It is fitting that this award bears Geoff’s name, and that it will continue his legacy by recognising others who embody the same spirit of dedication.

“Thank you, Gilgandra for ensuring Geoff’s legacy will continue to be remembered and celebrated.

“It gives me great pleasure to announce that the recipient of the 2026 Geoff Kiehne Emergency Services Volunteer of the Year Award.is…Geoff would be so happy with this…Chris Riley from the State Emergency Service.”
