The 2024 influenza season has started early and the Royal Flying Doctor Services Medical Services Gilgandra (RFDS Medical Services – Gilgandra) team are encouraging people to get their vaccination to protect themselves.

RFDS Medical Services - Gilgandra has 2024 flu vaccines available and people can make an appointment. “Historically the flu season has peaked around August but in the last two years we have seen the cases peak in June,” RFDS executive general manager of health and clinic services, and chief medical officer Dr Shannon Nott said. “It also takes approximately 10 days for the body to develop the antibodies that provide protection so it is important to get vaccinated as early as possible.”

Priority groups include children aged six months to five-years-old, people aged 65 and older, all Aboriginal people over six months old, pregnant women and people with serious health conditions. These groups are generally eligible to have their vaccination free.

People can confirm their individual eligibility or ineligibility for a free vaccination when booking their appointment. You don’t have to be an existing patient at the clinic to receive a flu vaccination. Anyone over the age of six months can receive a flu vaccination.
