Crowds flock to Aussie Day Speedway
Gilgandra Speedway attracted a large crowd of spectators and entrants for the Australia Day weekend meeting.
In a triumphant return to racing, Gilgandra Speedway attracted a large crowd of spectators and entrants for the Australia Day weekend meeting. Held on January 27, it was all action at the track after the club was given the tick of approval on recent track and facility repairs. There were seven events conducted at the meeting including Street Stockers, Fender Benders, Production and Junior Sedans, ACMA Nationals, Fast Fours, and the V8 Dirt Modifieds. The three heat rounds featured some hefty competition, a few actual fenders bent, tyres and rims wreaked and a spectacular flip crash right in front of the fellow drivers on the pit corner.
Gilgandra’s Corey Broom and Brian Harland delighted the crowd when they both walked away unscathed by their encounter in which Harland’s Fender Bender flipped upside down. Emergency services activated from the middle of the track quickly, with Broom tapping the top of his banged-up bender to show he was okay to his family watching on. Harland was helped from his car, and both had to walk back off the track in front of their fellow competitors who had lined up for a restart.
The racing action continued late into the night, with the sound from the track clearly heard in the Gilgandra township until its conclusion.
