Council confirms support for telco campaign
As reported on the front page of last week’s edition of The Gilgandra Weekly, a citizen-led initiative to highlight the failure of Telstra to provide useful mobile service in Gilgandra was recently launched.

After months of inaction by the big telco, local businessman Hayden Whiteman set up an online petition and has been in contact with Gilgandra Shire Council (GSC) and local members of parliament.
Telstra’s most recent response last week was that pending a development approval for a new tower, the Gilgandra community will have to suffer through one bar of useless 4G connection in the main street for at least another 6–11 months.
GSC have issued a statement on Tuesday, January 28, outlining council’s “full support for the community’s proactive efforts to improve connectivity in the region.”
“The ongoing connectivity issues affecting Gilgandra and its residents have become increasingly evident and disruptive. Initial discussions between council, local member Mark Coulton, and Telstra representatives have commenced and are continuing. Council remains committed to supporting the delivery of this essential service, including the push to fast-track the installation of a new mobile tower,” states council.
GSC mayor Doug Batten said reliable connectivity is vital for our community's growth and everyday life.
“It’s not just about convenience, it impacts our local economy, education, and safety in times of emergencies.
“We’re committed to working with all stakeholders on behalf of our community to ensure Gilgandra gets the services it deserves as quickly as possible,” said mayor Batten.
GSC have confirmed that no development application (DA) has been lodged for the installation of a new mobile tower, however, preliminary discussions have taken place.
“The ongoing connectivity issues have prompted the community to take action. Local residents are now lobbying Telstra to address these concerns and restore critical access to reliable mobile and internet services.”
GSC states it will provide updates to the community as they progress discussions with Telstra and government.
Residents can sign the local petition by scanning the QR code placed at various locations around town and are encouraged to complain to the telecommunications regulator.
