It is well and truly cricket season with the Gilgandra juniors back in action in the Dubbo District competition. This year the club is fielding an under 12 team in both the A and B competitions, after some strong performances in previous years. Randall Medd and Ash Hazelton are guiding the As with the team kicking off the season in style on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at McGrane Oval, after a bye in round one.

Mitch Cosier led the 12A Thunder to a big win over Dubbo CYMS, scoring 99 runs in the most dominant batting performance seen in the Gilgandra Thunder colours, and falling just shy of his maiden century. Mitch scored 99 off 47 balls and hit 14 fours and 4 sixes.

The rules state players are to retire after 30 balls and only come back in if the remainder of the team is dismissed. The team posted an impressive total of 192 with Lachie Fisher (27) and Georgia Allan (31) both having great knocks with the bat, and Georgia was a perfect batting partner once Mitch re-joined.

She gave him the strike but also scored at a run a ball herself and remained not out. When Thunder took the ball to bowl, it was clear the team were determined not to waste the big effort with the bat. The bowling was on point from the start with the CYMS batters never looking comfortable.

Jacqui Hutchison took 3/10 and once again delivered a quality spell, putting the ball on the stumps and good things happened. Five other bowlers also took wickets, dismissing CYMS for 73. While this was a positive performance with the ball, the bowlers will only get better as this was the first game of the year. The 12Bs are under the watchful eye of Luke Harrison this year, and it is great to see newcomers Alana Spora, Mitch Beaton, Braxten and Jackson Towns join the competition.

The Bs have also kicked off their season in style posting two wins from two games, a great start to their competition which has a big field of 12 teams. They had a dominant win over CYMS Green on the weekend 136-72 with the juniors sharing the runs and wickets around. The 12Bs take on Wellington Juniors this Saturday in Dubbo.
