2026 Community Group of the Year: Gilgandra and District Speedway Committee
Gilgandra Speedway and Gilgandra's CWA Evening Branch were the 2026 nominees for Community Group of the Year.
Cr Paul Mann read the two nominations for Gilgandra Speedway Committee, and the Gilgandra Country Women's Association Evening Branch, and presented the 2026 Community Group of the Year award to the Speedway committee.
"I am proud to acknowledge two strong nominations for the Community Group of the Year. These groups have gone above and beyond to support, connect and uplift our community, making our region a better place," he said.
Awarded: Gilgandra Speedway Committee
"The success of the Gilgandra Speedway is a direct result of the extraordinary dedication and countless hours contributed by its volunteers. Often working after hours and on weekends, these volunteers consistently give their time and energy to maintain and improve the speedway.
"Through persistence, teamwork, and a strong long‑term vision, the committee is continuously hard at work attending working bees, maintaining the facility, and ensuring the venue remains in excellent condition while meeting high safety and performance standards. Their commitment extends beyond daily operations, with many hours dedicated to securing race divisions and competitors, as well as preparing detailed and competitive grant applications. Through the successful Crown Lands Improvement Fund grant, the speedway completed critical infrastructure upgrades, transforming the facility from a three‑star standard to a five‑star venue.
"Each season, the committee proudly hosts seven to eight speedway events, with track and venue preparation commencing weeks before race night. On race night, volunteers can be seen across every area of the venue from gate entry and infield roles to canteens and bar service demonstrating the depth of commitment within the volunteer team. Beyond the speedway, committee members also support other local organisations and community events.
"In recognition of their tireless efforts, the committee was nominated for the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards, proudly representing Gilgandra, with their contributions also acknowledged through local media," read Cr Mann.
Louise Harland from the Speedway committee said she was very honoured and shocked to receive the award on behalf of the committee. She also thanked all the nominees and everyone for the award. Gilgandra Speedway held a two-day meeting over the Australia Day long weekend, so most of the committee members were taking a well-earnt rest.
Nominee: Gilgandra Country Association Evening Branch
"The Gilgandra Evening CWA branch fosters strong connections within Gilgandra and beyond. Their support spans many levels assisting individuals in times of need, hosting monthly markets, offering drought relief, and providing a venue for essential services without their own space.
"Over the past year, their contributions have been extensive. They’ve participated in school presentation days, supported major events like Goin’ to Gil, catered for the Gilgandra Film Festival and Australia Day Breakfast, laid a wreath at ANZAC Day, operated the kiosk at the Gilgandra Show, and hosted vibrant gatherings such as “Frockin’ the Outback.” Members also volunteer in local Op Shops, contribute to the Community Garden, and actively engage in groups like Gilgandra Alive and the Coo-ee Choir.
"Through tireless service and commitment, the Gilgandra Evening CWA continues to enrich and strengthen our region," read Cr Mann.
