Social Bowls
A small field of six bowlers enjoyed a game of social bowls last Wednesday, June 11. The winners of the afternoon were Mal Altmann, Dave Jones, and Garry Garbutt who defeated James L’Homme, Jayden Doran, and Gil Riley, 16-9.
Another six bowlers turned up for a game on Saturday, June 14. Michele Doherty, Dave Jones, and Brent McKenzie had a close win against Kayleb Doherty, Bob Rogers and Maxine Elsom, 15-12.
On Sunday, June 15, a good field of 15 bowlers took to the greens. The winners were Jayden Doran, Dave Jones (swinger), and Rod Howchin who defeated Dave Stockings and Rambo Young, 15-7. Well done to Dave Jones who played three games for three wins over the week of bowls.
In other games, Tracey Riley and Dylan Marchant defeated Baden Fisher and Shaun Marchant, 16-15; while Leroy Gregory, Brent McKenzie, and Danial Riley had a win against Bruce Parker, Mouse Holland, and Norm Lummis, 18–14.
Triples Championships
On the Triples Championships scene, in A Grade, on Saturday, June 14, Jo and Noel Raines defeated Ted Stewart and Wenden Riley, 31-9.
Shaun and Dylan Marchant defeated Shayne Barwick and Bob Dicks, 29-9.
Bob played some very good bowls while Shayne didn’t seem to be concentrating very well but he did have good reason as will become obvious in the rest of this bowls report. Who said bowls and wedding proposals don’t mix! Shayne asks the question and Michele says “yes”.
Saturday, June 14 was a first for The Gil Sporties when Shayne (Shoey) Barwick got down on one knee on the bowling green and proposed to Michele Doherty after the last end of bowls. Quite a few bowlers were on hand to witness this momentous occasion and to help Shayne get back to his feet if needed.
Congratulations to Michele and Shayne from the bowlers and members of the club. By the way she did say “yes”.
