Gil Sporties team does well at state finals
Thursday, June 26, was the day the Sporties bowlers headed to the big smoke to represent the Mid-West Region in the finals of the State Grade Five Open Pennants for 2024/25.
The starting teams who competed were, team one, Jo Raines, Blake Cook, Dylan Marchant, and Noel Raines.
Team two, Evan Kew, Mal Altmann, Rambo Young, and Garry Raines.
Team three, Maxine Elsom, David Duffy, Brent McKenzie, and Danial Riley. The reserved were Shaun Marchant and Wenden Riley.
The team minder, coach and supporter was Bob Dicks.
Our first game was against Condong who we defeated 66-58, 9-1. The second game was against Narooma who defeated us 61-55, 8.5-1.5. The third game we had a good win against Moorefield with the score being 80-46, 10-0. The result of the team winning two of the three games, put us in the first round of the finals against Merewether on Saturday afternoon.
Unfortunately this was as our last game as Merewether, who played too well on the day, ran out 69-52, 9-1 winners.
Congratulations goes to the Garry Raines team who played four games for three wins and a draw. All bowlers ended up playing at some stage for this team as Mal Altmann subbed out after game one with a dicky knee. He was replaced by Shaun Marchant for game two. Shaun Marchant was replaced by Wenden Riley for games three and four. This left us with no subs and it looked like Bob Dicks might have to get the bowls gear on.
The Noel Raines-skipped team had three wins and one loss. The Danial Riley team had one win and three losses.
The Gil Sporties Bowlers showed that they deserved their place in the State Finals as they were running fifth out of 16 teams on points after playing the round games and only getting beat by Narooma by six points.
Narooma then went on to play in the finals on Sunday, June 29 but were defeated by Belfield, 61-52.
Overall it was a great experience for our bowlers and a very enjoyable time was had by all.
