The project was founded by Kendall Whyte after the loss of her brother Jayden Whyte to suicide in 2018. Her mission is to “spark difficult conversations and encourage people to speak up when experiencing mental health concerns,” according to the project’s website.

“We believe the symbol of the blue tree now holds a whole new meaning for so many. Acting as a source of conversation that helps save lives, the blue trees are visual reminders to check in on loved ones and mates who might be struggling.” Now, blue trees have been painted across every continent (except for Antarctica). They are both symbols of hope and conversation starters, offering a positive way for people to connect and to change the way people address mental health.

Gilgandra’s Community Bank Bendigo Bank sponsored the painting of Gilgandra’s new blue tree. It was painted by David Corcoran of Paint ‘n’ Plus, who described it as an “odd job”, but one “we’re proud to have been involved with!” Gilgandra’s blue tree is located three minutes from town on Mendooran Road on the Castlereagh Highway, one kilometre from the Newell Highway turnoff. Anyone can visit at anytime.
