Bendigo Bank ABC Shield - Cricket
Coonabarabran and Town Services secure thrilling victories in a low-scoring round, while Town Services' Kieren Hazelton shines with an unbeaten 65.
For USC-Marthaguy, Duncan (2-9 off eight overs), veteran Col Irving (2-24 off four overs) and Ben Storer (0-22 off eight overs) all bowled well. Meanwhile, the other matches were low-scoring affairs.
Coonabarabran (88 all out in 28.3 overs) lost 10-58 but still held on to defeat Gulargambone (69 all out in 26.1 overs) at Coonabarabran’s number three oval. Steve Hallett (14) and Ben Hjort (17) put on 30 for the first wicket for Coonabarabran, but after that, Reuben Shannon (36) watched wickets fall at the other end before he was the last player dismissed (run-out). Peter Peters (4-6 off five overs) and Jaylem Peters (3-14 off four overs) did the most damage for Gulargambone.
In reply, Gular skipper Brandon Hammond scored 36 and Jerome Chatfield added 17, but no one else got into double figures as Gulargambone was rolled for 69. New-ball bowlers Cameron Whittall (4-19 off eight overs) and Hjort (3-11 off eight overs) did the early damage before Koopa Thompson (2-1 off 2.1 overs) cleaned up the tail.
Town Services (112 all out in 28.2 overs) defeated Coonamble outfit Gidgee (75 all out) at McGrane Oval in Gilgandra to conclude the round as Curban had the bye. Gidgee skipper Tyne Chapman (5-13 off five overs) and Blaike Fernando (2-19 off five overs) did the most damage while Bevan McEwen (1-6 off four overs) and Dan Smith (1-9 off four overs) bowled economical spells.
Kieren Hazelton’s 65 not out (nine fours, one six) was crucial, the Town Services opener carrying his bat. Chris Semmler also scored 11. In reply, Gidgee opener Mark Stewart blasted three sixes and five fours in his 52, but was the only double figure score as wickets fell fast. Adam Hazelton (4-19 off seven overs), Mark Temple (4-18 off 4.2 overs) and Scott Basham (2-38 off seven overs) did the damage for Town Services.
In round five action on Saturday, November 30, the draw on PlayHQ states Coonabarabran will host USC-Marthaguy, Gulargambone plays Curban at Gulargambone, and Biddon-Tooraweenah hosts Gidgee at Tooraweenah Oval. Town Services has the bye.
