Local Gilgandra girl Dakotah Gilmour has been selected as the 2024 NSW Suffolk Society Young Ambassador. Early this year, Dakotah began attending ag shows with the Walker Suffolks, supported by local principles Brett McBurnie and Amiee Vernon.

“Without Brett and Amiee I wouldn’t have been given the many opportunities that I have had,” Dakotah told The Gilgandra Weekly. She applied for the NSW Suffolk Society Young Ambassador role after encouragement from Ms Vernon and the secretary of the Suffolk Society, Kevin White. Dakotah was then nominated, and further won the award to become the 2024 NSW Suffolk Society Young Ambassador, which was presented at the Dubbo Elders NSW State Annual Sheep Show.

“The young ambassador program will open the doors for me to increase my skills and knowledge base,” Dakotah said. “Having this position I hope to help promote the suffolk breed and its aspects, and encourage other young people to get involved with the breed.”

Dakotah also participated in the junior judging held at the Dubbo showground on Sunday, May 12. She placed sixth in the merinos 15 to 25 years section.

“I’m very happy with my efforts and achievements [so far],” Dakotah said. “Thank you to [everyone] for acknowledging my efforts and achievements. I would also like to thank my parents, Aimee, Brett, and the NSW Suffolk Society [for this opportunity],” she said.
