Indigenous basketballers shine
Last month, four Gilgandra High School students competed in the National Indigenous Basketball Tournament on the Gold Coast.
Jace Baker, Najarra Naden, Lochy Nolan, and Cale McEwen all represented Gilgandra proudly in their respective NSW teams.
The girls’ and boys’ NSW teams versed teams from each state, and all players performed the best to their ability.
“Both teams represented their home- towns and state with pride and great sportsmanship,” said vice-president of the Gilgandra Basketball Association, Kristina Wendt. “The competition was at
the highest level and both teams are to be commended for their efforts.” The NSW boys’ team was coached by Kimm Naden, who was supported by Deidrie Naden as regional co-ordinator.
The Indigenous basketball tournament was created by Australian Olympian and NBA star Patty Mills. The four Gilgandra athletes participated in train- ing sessions with junior NBA coaches, and attended motivation sessions with Kathleen O'Kelly-Kennedy, Patrick Johnson, Danny Morseu, and Samantha Faulkner.
The athletes also had the opportunity to meet Patty Mills' mother Aunty Yvonne, and his Uncle Benny.
