Great field of bowlers for Wednesday comp

By Maxine Elsom

A great field of 20 bowlers enjoyed an exciting game last Wednesday with the winners Kimi Barwick, ‘Mouse’ Holland, and Dylan Marchant defeating Ester, George Alchin, and ‘Rambo’ Young by 19-8. In other games, Ron Quealey, Larry Clarke, and Gary Harvey, had a win against Phil Godber, Kel Kilsby, and Noel Raines by 17-12. Garry Garbutt and Rod Howchin also defeated Mike Newstead and Barry Johnson by 19-15.

In a stand-out game, Roger Irvin and Gil Riley both played really well for their win against a couple of very handy bowlers in Bruce Parker and Norm Lummis by 22-16. Later in the week, Sunday social bowls winners were Hudson Duffy, Kel Kilsby, and David Duffy who defeated Bruce Parker, Leroy Gregory, and Lance by 20-11.

Baden Fisher and Shayne Barwick also claimed a victory against Jeff Jones and Norm Lummis by 19-17. A group of Gil bowlers also travelled to Coonabarabran on the weekend for their Annual Easter Bowls Tournament. The pairs were played on Saturday with the teams being Barry Johnson and Rod Howchin; Dylan and Shaun Marchant; Maxine Elsom and Jo Raines; and Garry and Noel Raines.

There were not too many claims to fame, however, with only Noel and Garry winning their three games to gain a spot in the semi-final. Unfortunately though, they went down by one shot on the last-end and had to settle for equal third. Jo and Maxine won two of their three games, so they were very happy with that result.

They would however have liked to have won all three games so as to have a play-off against the Raines boys. Very fortunate for the lads that it didn’t eventuate. On Sunday, the fours were played with Dylan, Shaun, Rod, and Barry, all playing together.

Noel and Jo were joined by Troy and Clare Brown from Coonabarabran, though neither team made it further than their round games they all enjoyed the weekend and the hospitality of the ‘Coona’ Bowling Club.
