Gilgandra Newspapers has appointed Michael Thurlow as acting editor.

“It’s an exciting time to be joining the Gilgandra Newspapers team,” said Mr Thurlow.

“In addition to The Gilgandra Weekly, we have The Nyngan Weekly, which was launched in 2020, and will soon be establishing a third masthead in Narromine.”

Managing editor, Lucie Peart, has welcomed Mr Thurlow to the team.

“As I head off on maternity leave, I know I am leaving the newspapers in the capable hands of our growing team. It is wonderful to have Mr Thurlow edit the paper, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge from the industry as well as being a local,” said Mrs Peart.

Mr Thurlow joins Gilgandra Newspapers with experience in radio and television news.

“I completed my journalism degree in the early 2000s while volunteering in community radio. I then joined Macquarie Regional Radioworks where I produced and presented news for their central and north Queensland stations,” he said.

“I later worked in Seven’s Townsville newsroom before joining WIN in Rockhampton as a journalist, producer, chief of staff and presenter. I’ve also covered news at 2DU.”

Mr Thurlow said he is delighted to be joining the local team.

“The Gilgandra Newspapers team is a close-knit one. Producing the papers each week is a massive team effort. I look forward to working with Mrs Peart, our journalists, production staff, contributors and advertisers,” he said.

“Mrs Peart leaves big shoes to fill, and I shall do my very best.”

As well as Mr Thurlow, two new members have also joined the Gilgandra Newspapers team.

G’day g’day! I am Alex and I’m new to the paper and to Gilgandra!

I’m originally from Coolah and have come to Gil via a few years in Sydney and overseas.

I am a radio presenter by trade, but I’ve started to branch out a little by joining the Gilgandra Weekly team on Mondays. If you’re sending through sport and school’s news, I’m the one editing photos and throwing the words in the paper.

I’m still finishing up my uni degree online so when I’m not at the paper, I’m either studying or watching the Super W and Super rugby. I love a bit of sport so if you need me in a team, I’ll be there.

Oh, and I’m a girl so shout out to the bloke who tried to get me in to play prop for the Galahs!

Shiree Ryan.

I'm Shiree Ryan and I am in the Gilgandra Newspapers office two days a week, Tuesday and Wednesday.

I began my career at the paper as a journalist some years ago, and my role now is typesetting. My time is spent working on the layup of the various newspapers printed here as well as commercial print jobs.

When I'm not at the paper I am kept busy by our four little people.
