First in Gil's history: Smoking Ceremony at Aus Day celebrations

For the first time in Gilgandra’s history, an Indigenous Smoking Ceremony was performed at the local Australia Day celebrations, and everybody present was invited to participate.

Smoking ceremonies are used to cleanse places and people of bad spirits, and to promote the wellbeing of everybody on Country.

It involves the burning of various native plants to produce smoke, which has cleansing properties.

The ceremony last week was undertaken by local Wiradjuri elder, Uncle Ralph Naden OAM, who stood by the smoke, and used it to cleanse those who participated.
