Youth orchestra plays first note

On Monday evening, the Symphonia Jubilate Outback (SJO) orchestra came to Gilgandra Public School to launch the first youth orchestra of its type.

The free launch event was created to encourage students to sign up, and join the orchestra.

Open to all students in year three upwards, the SJO has no minimum level of ability required, with no auditions, in order to foster a safe and encouraging environment.

The initiative covers hundreds of kilometres, and is open to NSW public, catholic, or independent schools residing in and around small regional towns in the central west. In 2019, the Symphonia Jubilate, a public school symphony orchestra organisation, visited Warren on a regional tour.

Here, the SJO idea was born, and after being postponed for numerous years, the orchestra is finally kick starting in Gilgandra.

Almost 80 students turned out to give the orchestra a go, and although red faced, the children all left with smiles.
