Two big wins for Gilgandra council

Gilgandra Shire Council has taken out two awards at this year’s Local Government Week awards. Held in Sydney over the weekend, the evening celebrates councils who demonstrate excellence across a range of categories.


Gilgandra took out the RH Dougherty Award for Excellence in Communications, for its Shop Local and #LocalLegend campaign in 2021. These campaigns were created to encourage local residents to shop locally, with weekly prize draws. The second award won by

Gilgandra Shire Council was a Department of Communities and Justice NSW Youth Week Award, after being judged to the best small council with he most outstanding Youth Week program.

Activities included “Jurassic Park in the Dark”, Inflatables at Hunter Park, KYUP! Project, Silent Glow Disco Party, Paintball, Lego and Science at the Library.

In the RH Dougherty Awards, Gilgandra Shire Council were also acknowledged as finalists in the fol- lowing two categories:

• Reporting to your Community – Endless Possibilities in the Reporting Cycle,

• Innovation in Special Events – Under the Gums 2021.

“Congratulations to the many staff involved in the delivery of these pro- grams – from the inspirational ideas, the solid plans, the hard yakka of set up and pack up, creative comms and promotions, all those #LocalLegends present

and the hidden pillars of knowledge focused on the details. Also to the stellar staff who put together the nominations,” said council’s general manager David Neeves.

“I know these programs take great teamwork to be successful and I appreciate the efforts of everyone involved.”

Representing Gilgandra Shire Council at the awards were Mr Neeves, Kathryn Larkin, and Julie Prout.
