Speedway now accessible by all
Gilgandra Speedway is now open to all members of the community, after new accessibility paths were officially opened on Saturday, December 4.
Through council’s disability inclusion action plan, Orana Living residents were given the choice of what they would like to put the grant towards.
In an uncontested vote, residents decided that the speedway was to receive the money. Now, with brand new paths, entry points, and extra places to watch, everybody can enjoy the speedway.
“There’s now easy access that we didn’t have before,” said Orana Living manager Janelle Lummis.
“The bus can drive straight up to the top, and residents can get straight out. Any community member in a wheelchair can now access the speedway.”
Along with the new paths, the long-awaited new toilet block was also officially opened over the weekend. The block was two years in the making, put on hold multiple times by COVID-19 restrictions.
Supported by local tradies, as well as labour and time donated by speedway members, the block features all flushable toilets, accessible toilets, and showers.
Funding for the toilet block was provided through the government’s drought community program grant.
The official opening was welcomed by residents of Orana Living, and the excitement only grew when some of Gilgandra’s Speedway members put on a show down at the track.
The residents were all ecstatic about the new pathways and toilet block and are looking forward to the first speedway event for 2022 in January.
