New principal for Gilgandra Public School

Meet Gilgandra Public School’s new principal: Michael Darcy.

By Emily Middleton

He has an open door policy, and is always up for a cup of tea and a conversation. Mr Darcy started his teaching career in Gilgandra many years ago, after holding the position as Aboriginal education officer (AEO) at Narromine High School for 15 years.

“I’ve been in the department of education since I was 19,” he said. “I did my teaching degree externally while I was the AEO in Narromine, and was placed in Gilgandra after completing my studies.”

Teaching for five years in Gilgandra, Mr Darcy was offered the role of assistant principal at Buninyong High School in Dubbo.

“After a long stint in different positions including relieving principal, the job at Gilgandra Public School came up, and here we are,” said Mr Darcy.

Born and raised in Narromine, Mr Darcy is well acquainted with the area and understands the value of community to towns like Gilgandra.

“I know the community quite well, I played a lot of sports against a lot of people from this town. Primarily rugby league, but also swimming and a few others. Gilgandra is a unique, community-driven school, which is something I’m committed to and will ensure when making decisions.”

The opportunities for regional schools can sometimes be limited, and Mr Darcy wants to ensure no student misses out. He says he is committed to strengthening students to perform to the best of their ability, and making strategic choices to ensure this.

“I enjoy working in small communities. Being an Aboriginal man myself, I get great satisfaction in supporting Aboriginal students to achieve their potential as I do for all students and their families. It’s about setting those high expectations, and ensuring all students get there.

“I do thrive on the thought of being responsible for making very strategic decisions around student growth and improvement. I see my position as a very privileged position that can have a genuine impact on students’ lives.

“I want the same as what everyone wants. I want to ensure Gilgandra Public School is the place for your child to be, in order to learn and thrive,” he said.
