Marissa crowned Gil’s Best Baker

Marissa Raines, worker at Cooee Lodge, has been named Gilgandra’s Best Baker for 2022.

Krystal Lamb organised the competition for the second year, as part of the lodge’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event.

Held on the lawns of Cooee Lodge on May 6, entrants from around Gilgandra came together to cook their best slice, cake, savory, or sweet treat.

The baked goods were judged by Shayne Barwick, Joy Semmler, and Mick Welsh, with Ms Raines coming out on top. “I’m so proud and happy! I can’t move on from this!” said Ms Raines as she danced around. After coming second to Sam Barnes at last year’s best baker

competition, Ms Raines entered two cakes to be judged to try and secure her first prize this year. She cooked a chocolate cake with custard topping, and a chocolate cake with her secret recipe, with the latter being the winner.

Ms Raines celebrated her win by doing a victory dance and singing to herself.

“Marissa’s reaction was priceless!” said Ms Lamb.

Cooee Lodge residents, family, and friends all enjoyed their morning tea provided by Ms Lamb, with some of the goodies also provided by Garth Mason, manager of Carlo’s SUPA IGA.
