High school's new captains

Gilgandra High School students have elected their new leadership team for 2022.

Sarah Schier and Clayton Fanning have been appointed as captains, with Madison Hourigan and Kooper Fox as vice captains.

The students were thrilled when they were told about their new roles on Monday, October 25, after elections had been pushed back due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

“It’s pretty exciting, and a bit of a surprise,” said Sarah.

“Everyone kind of dreams of being captain of the high school, so it’s pretty cool that we’ve gotten this opportunity.”

“I think it’s pretty surreal, it still hasn’t sunken in yet, and I don’t think it will until presentation night when we are officially captains,” said Clayton.

For others, the announcement was weight off the shoulders.

“I think it’s a bit of a relief, we don’t have to worry about the election process and everything now,” said Madison.

Each student said they were proud to be a representative of their school, and were looking forward to getting involved wherever they can.

“I mainly just want to be able to help the younger students, and be involved with some of the bigger things that go on in the school,” said Sarah.

Clayton and Madison agreed.

“I think the biggest thing about being school captain is you need to be involved in the wider community,” said Clayton.

“I chose to be vice-captain to represent the school outside in events, and help the students,” said Madison.

Each student brings a unique feature to the team, with personal interests and passions.

Sarah is into sport fitness, and health, and is an aspiring pharmacist.

“That’s my goal at the moment,” said Sarah.

Madison is currently striving to be an English and history teacher.

“I’m just kind of interested in doing well in school so I can become one,” said Madison.

Clayton is well known as the ‘horse kid’, and wants to see where that passion takes him.

“I’d like to be a teacher as well, I’m just deciding if I want to be an ag or history teacher.”

Kooper was absent at the time of interview.
