Telstra Tech Savvy Seniors

At Tech Savvy Seniors last week, we continued to learn about emails, using phones, tablets, and laptops. There was time for plenty of questions and problem solving.

These sessions are thanks to a partnership with Telstra, the state government, and the State Library of NSW, and are for people with little or no prior experience with technology. If you would like to join us for future sessions, please contact the library.

After-school activities

The library has two fun afterschool activities for children every week. The first is Designs From Your Mind LEGO® Club - with a weekly challenge to get everyone creating, and free time to build with the library’s great range of kits. Recently, our builders took on the challenge of building a pinball machine.

First, they looked at different designs of pinball machines made with LEGO® bricks, deciding whether to build with studs facing up or not.

Then they had to incorporate moving levers and obstacles into the machine, some creative obstacles were snakes, log piles and motorbikes. Check out the videos of all our finished machines on Facebook or come see them on display at the library along with the other amazing things we built this week!

The other activity is Code Club where we have fun with technology of all kinds. Last week, we worked on scratch block coding, learning how to apply random variables.

Random elements were applied to a character’s movement and positioning, size, wait time and other functions. With this new information we created our first scoring game and amused ourselves by catching ghosts in the library.

For the hands-on component of the session, we started building a solar-powered car. Places are limited in both of these pafter-school programs, so bookings are essential.

Do you like to write?

Our next session of Point Blank Writers’ Group will be held this week. All are welcome.

This friendly group is for adults with a love of words and writing. We have a writing workshop at every meeting, and we share stories and laughter.

This month, we will be writing about our memories
